Series History:
The trophy idea was developed over 10 years ago and was created to build the rivalry in athletics' competition while bringing added attention to college sports in Central Texas, especially in the I-35 Corridor. Historically the trophy was only awarded to the winner of the men's basketball series, but now the rivalry is expanded to an all sport competition. The series looks to provide a sense of pride from each university's alumni, build school spirit among each institution's student body and increase attendance at sporting events between the two schools.

How the Series Works:
The competition between Texas State University and University of Texas - San Antonio has been enhanced with the creation of the "I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry Series". A trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points based on matchups between the two universities in common sports throughout the academic year.

At the conclusion of the final scheduled athletic event between the two schools each year, the winner of that year's "I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry Series" will receive a trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners. The winning institution will retain possession of the trophy for one year until the award presentation the following year.

How the Point System Works:
Texas State University and University of Texas - San Antonio will compete in various sports with the point total for each listed below. The point system will be based on the following:

  • The winner of head-to-head match-ups during Western Athletic Conference play only in each sport will receive two points for each win.
  • Football wins will be doubled (Road win is 6, Home win is 4)
  • For sports that do not play a round-robin regular season, a higher finish in tournaments or championships will determine two points.
  • If round robin teams should meet in conference tournaments, an extra two points shall be rewarded.
  • An extra point will be given to the school for any road win.
  • If the contest is played at a neutral site, only two points will be awarded.
  • All WAC Tournaments are considered neutral sites.
  • In the sport of baseball and softball, the winner of the three game series will be awarded four points with a bonus point for a road series victory.
  • Should the two schools meet in postseason play, i.e. NCAA Tournament, the winner shall receive two (2) additional points for that sport.

    Award:
Each year at the conclusion of the final scheduled athletic event between the two institutions, the winner of that year's "I-35 Maroon vs. Orange Rivalry Series" will receive a trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners. The winning institution will retain possession of the trophy for a period of one (1) year, until the award presentation of the following year.

    Sportsmanship:
Each school and its student-athletes will conduct themselves in a way demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout all competition. Any forms of bad sportsmanship will not be tolerated and could be deemed a loss of points toward the rivalry series. In perception and practice, sportsmanship is defined as those qualities which are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others:
  • Play fair, take loss or defeat without complaint, or victory without gloating
  • Treat others as you wish to be treated
  • Respect others and one's self
  • Impose self-control, be courteous, and gracefully accept results of one's actions
  • Display ethical behavior by being good (character) and doing right (action)
  • Be a good citizen
