Strutters History

The Strutters of Texas State University have long been associated with pageantry and excellence in performance for Texas State intercollegiate athletics. The organization is considered one of the premier dance teams in America. Since their inception in 1960, the Strutters boast over 3,000 alumnae who have helped to make the organization what it is today.

This exceptional organization was founded by Ms. Barbara Guinn Tidwell, renowned as a legend in drill team history. Mrs. Tidwell served as director/choreographer for 37 years. From 1997-2013, the director/choreographer of Strutters was former Strutter Captain Mrs. Susan Angell-Gonzalez. Former Strutter Tammy Fife served as the director/choreographer from 2013-20. Currently, the Strutters are under the direction of former Strutter Head Captain and NFL cheerleader, Selina Flores Lloyd.

The Strutters organization is unique in that it was the FIRST precision dance team formed at a four-year university and is currently the largest in the nation. For over 60 years, Strutters have served as ambassadors for Texas State University on state, national and international levels with performances in 27 countries spanning 4 continents.

One of the most impressive honors was their selection as the first U.S. dance team to perform in the People's Republic of China. Other highlights include: three Presidential Inaugural Parades, numerous NFL & NBA halftime performances, MTV's Total Request Live, a national television commercial for Coca-Cola, and appearances in five movies. The Texas State Strutters have also represented Texas State University and the City of San Marcos in the NBC network television program, "America's Got Talent."  Strutters also performed on board Royal Carribbean's Mariner of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas. The Strutters have been feature performers in two nationally televised Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades, along with the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago and the Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia.

Aside from excellence in dance, the organization takes pride in helping young women develop communication skills, character and confidence. While hosting annual camps and competitions, Strutters serve as exemplary role models to thousands of high school dance team members across Texas and in Hawaii.

In 1998 "Strutters Always" became an official Texas State University alumnae chapter. Goals of "Strutters Always" include communicating with alumnae and friends and supporting the Strutters Organization. The Board of Directors assists with alumni reunions and Strutters special events. The official website is txst.com/feature/StruttersAlways.
