Texas State vs. Sul Ross State Game Notes

 

This marks the second straight season and the fourth time in the last five years that Texas State has opened a season with a home game. The Bobcats defeated Howard Payne 102-67 to open the 2009-10 season.

Texas State’s 89-62 victory over Sul Ross State marks the fifth consecutive year that Texas State has opened a season with a victory. In addition to defeating Howard Payne last season, the Bobcats defeated Cal State Fullerton 76-66 in 2008-09; Huston-Tillotson 101-81 in 2007-08 and Dallas Baptist 106-93 in 2006-07. 

Texas State had 12 different players score in the game and four Bobcats finished the game in double figures against Sul Ross.

Transfer Eddie Rios made his first start for the Bobcats against Sul Ross. He scored three points and recorded three steals in the first half against the Lobos. 

Preseason All-Southland Conference selection Cameron Johnson scored eight points in the second half after netting just three points in the first half.  

John Bowman scored the first two points of the season on a jump shot from the right elbow of the free throw lane with 19:00 left in the first half.

Travis Jones also started for the first time for the Bobcats. A junior college transfer from Lon Morris College, Jones scored five points on a three-pointer from the right wing  with 15:00 minutes to play in the first half, and made a slam dunk with 14:01 left on a fast break pass from John Bowman.

A. J. Stewart made his debut as a Bobcat after transferring from Kentucky.  Stewart scored his first two points as a Bobcat with 11:41 left to play on a slam dunk and finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds.  

Freshman Reid Koenen also made his debut as a Bobcat when he played two minutes in the opening period.

J.B. Conley scored 13 points in the first half to lead the Bobcats and become the first Bobcat to score in double figures this season. It marks the 12th time in Conley’s career at Texas State that he has scored in double figures. He finished the game with 17 points.

Ryan White has changed his uniform number to #1 this season after wearing number 32 each of his first three seasons at Texas State. White finished the game with two points and game-highs of six assists and four steals.

Tony Bishop reached double figures on the first play in the second half on a lay-up off an alley-oop by Ryan White. Bishop scored eight points in the first half. He finished the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes played.
