HOUSTON – Texas State Volleyball fell to UTSA in five sets on Saturday.
In the loss, the Bobcats (5-6 overall) hit .094 led by fifth year
India Bennett with 14 kills and a .308 [14-6-26] hitting percentage. UTSA (9-2 overall) only recorded one more kill than Texas State but ultimately the match came down to the offense's ability to execute, with the Roadrunners committing 10 less hitting errors than the Bobcats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: 25-15
The Bobcats roared to life in the first set, holding the Roadrunners to a -.071 hitting percentage and a meager six kills. On the other side of the tape, Texas State racked up 12 kills in the set on a .148 hitting percentage led by Bennett with six. The Bobcats were firing on all cylinders in the first frame and scoring everywhere possible as they also posted three service aces led by fifth year
Jasmine Purakal with two. The net defense held up its end with four blocks to UTSA's two, led again by Bennett with three including one solo effort.
Set 2: 23-25
The second set flipped the script, however, as the Roadrunners improved to a .213 hitting percentage while the Bobcats fell to a .087. Four different members of Texas State's offense recorded two kills and Bennett once again led in blocks with two. Senior
Brooke Bentke also grabbed a service ace.
Set 3: 25-21
Texas State punched right back in the third set with a match-high 61% sideout percentage and a .222 [16-8-36] hitting percentage. Led by Bennett with five kills, the Bobcats posted 16 kills to the Roadrunners' seven. Texas State also won the floor defense battle, with 13 digs to UTSA's 10. Ally Adair was responsible for the lone block of the set with a solo effort.
Set 4: 12-25
The fourth set was almost the exact opposite from the third, with UTSA posting a .370 hitting percentage to Texas State's -.031. The Roadrunners also recorded 13 kills to the Bobcats' seven, and outblocked Texas State, 5-2.
Set 5: 15-8
The final set of the day was more balanced offensively, with UTSA posting only seven kills to Texas State's five. On defense, the Roadrunners were able to grab a block and tallied seven digs to the Bobcats' four to eventually take the match.
