BOONE, N.C. – Texas State softball split its final games of the regular season with a 13-12 loss and a 15-1, 5 innings, win versus App State.
Both games today were near the Bobcats' highest scoring on the season, with the 15-1 win being the Bobcats' highest scoring single game since the Bobcats 15-0 win at UTSA on March 22, 2023.
How It Happened:
Texas State 12, App State 13:
It was a slug fest between the two teams to start the afternoon in Boone. The two teams combined for eight runs in the first inning, with Texas State trailing by two after it. Zarate opened the scoring by scoring two on a sac fly and error. From there, another sac fly found Texas State with three on the board. App State answered, though, with a RBI single and a grand slam to take the lead after the first.
Texas State leveled the game at five with a RBI double from
Keely Williams in the third inning. Williams finished the game at 4-4 on the day, the first four-hit game of her career. App State hit back, though, with an RBI double of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Texas State piled on six runs in the top of the 4
th after a leadoff single from
Karmyn Bass. From there, a HBP and another single by Zarate loaded the bases. Bass would come in to score on another sac fly from Harvey. After that, a 2 RBI double from Kelnar scored two more. Mel Reeves hit an RBI double of her own as well, while
Keely Williams closed out the scoring with an RBI single. Texas State's six runs on six hits gave them a five-run lead after four.
Unfortunately, App State swung back once again. A leadoff walk and a pair of hit by pitches helped them get runners on who came around to score on an RBI walk and 2 RBI single. From there, they added two more on an RBI groundout and a RBI single to draw it level at 11.
A solo home run in the bottom of the 5
th gave App State the lead. It took Texas State until the top of the 7
th to answer, with a solo home run of their own. Off the bat of Coleman, the home run was the senior's 16
th of the season, just one shy now of tying her program record for single season home runs set last season.
Ultimately, App State walked it off with an RBI single to make it a 13-12 win for the Mountaineers.
Texas State 15, App State 1:
Texas State's bats stayed hot in game two, beginning with a six-run first inning. Starting things off was Zarate's 3 RBI home run with some assistance from the Mountaineer's center fielder. Her second home run of the day scored Williams and Bubela. From there, Kelnar hit an RBI single, followed by a Reeves RBI single to make it 5-0. Kelnar scored on a wild pitch while the Mountaineers walked Williams to score the 6
th run.
App State scored their lone run of the night in the bottom of the 1
st on a single through the left side.
Texas State added five more in the 2
nd inning after a leadoff walk of Coleman. A pair of singles and a throwing error helped Texas State score two. From there, Bass had a 2 RBI single to make it a 10-1 game. The final run was an 2 RBI single from Coleman who had her third AB of the inning in the second inning.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the 3
rd with a RBI double from Bass and a 2 RBI home run from Kelnar. Kelnar's home run was the first of her season.
Maddy Azua tossed the complete game, allowing just one run and walking one batter while striking out six. This was her 25
th win of the season as she improve to 25-10 on the year.
After today's two games, Texas State finished the regular season with a 36-19 record and went 16-8 in conference play.

Texas State will wait to see the final standings to find out when it will play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The tournament runs May 6-9 in Lafayette, Louisiana but Texas State will play its first game on May 7, earning a first round bye. The whole tournament will be streamed on ESPN+.
