SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball bounced back in statement fashion to take the series against ULM in week one of Sun Belt play. A five run bottom of the 5
th helped Texas State to a 10-2 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon.
Highlighting the game was a 3-3 day for
Keely Williams with two doubles, a walk and 2 RBI. She and
Sami Hood went 303 on the day while Hood also hit a solo home run. Alongside the pair, Maddy Azua tossed the complete game for her third win of the week.
How it Happened:
Maddy Azua tossed the complete game in the circle allowing six hits and two earned runs in her outing. She finished the week with 22 innings pitched and just the two earned runs allowed.
In game three against the Warhawks, Azua got her first of three strikeouts on the first batter she faced. She'd allow a base runner from an error but otherwise escape the inning.
Texas State got the scoring started early, after a leadoff double from Williams. She came around to score on a Bubela single and the sac-fly from
Karmyn Bass.
Aiyana Coleman was walked on her first and all her at-bats of the game, three of which were intentional walks.
Azua retired the side in order in the second, and Texas State added two more in the bottom of the 2
nd. It was another double from Williams that led it off, she got out trying to score from 2nd, but
Sydney Harvey was able to score. Before that,
Sami Hood scored after singling to get on base.
ULM added a run in the top of the 3
rd after a trio of singles had the bases loaded. Azua was able to get out of the inning having allowed just the one run.
Texas State added two more runs in the bottom of the 3
rd. Zarate scored the first run after reaching from a double to left field.
Megan Kelnar also scored after she reached on a fielder choice.
Neither side added any runs in the 4
th inning, but ULM added a second run on a solo home run in the top of the 5
th.
Texas State answered with a home run of its own, though. Hood hit her second home run of the season to make it a 6-2 game. From there,
Sydney Harvey walked and the Warhawks made a pitching change, just for them to walk Williams as well. Bubela flew out to put the Bobcats at two outs, but the offense didn't let up.
Karmyn Bass singled to load the bases, and the Warhawks walked Coleman to score the 7
th run for Texas State. From there, an error by the Warhawks second basemen gave the Bobcats time to score two more runs.
Zarate was walked to load the bases, then to walk off the run rule win,
Megan Kelnar was also walked in four pitched for the 10
th run to make it a 10-2 game.
After today's game, Texas State is now 18-9 on the season and 2-1 in Sun Belt play.
