Softball Starts Season with 8-2 Win vs Toledo

TEMPE, Ariz – Texas State softball started out the season on the right foot with an 8-2 win against Toledo on Thursday afternoon.

The Bobcats scored eight runs on nine hits including two home runs from Kate Bubela and Keely Williams. The Bobcat pitching staff worked together with Maddy Azua, Emma Strood and Kaili Witherell each seeing time in the circle, allowing just two runs on eight hits.

How it Happened:
Maddy Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats, allowing a run on two hits in the top half of the inning. The Bobcats wasted no time answering Toledo's run, though. After loading the bases on three consecutive walks, Bass scored on a fielder's choice off Coleman's bat. From there, an RBI single from Bubela and a RBI double from Megan Kelnar helped the Bobcats score three runs to take the lead.

Toledo added their second run on an RBI single off Azua in the third innings, that would be their final run of the game.

Kate Bubela led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to extend the Bobcats lead to two, making it a 4-2 ball game.

Emma Strood came in ti pitch in the top of the 5th. Aiyana Coleman doubled in the bottom of the fifth for the fifth run, scoring Harley Vestal who reached base from a single. She advanced to second on a sac-bunt from Karmyn Bass.

The Bobcat offense continued to excel in the bottom of the 6th with three runs on three hits, highlighted by a 2 RBI home run for Keely Williams. Emily Fish had come in for Aiyana Coleman and double to centerfield for the RBI that brought in the eighth and final run of the game.

Kaili Witherell came in to close out the game in the 7th, making her collegiate debut. She recorded three outs in eight pitches on a pop up, line out and ground out.

Texas State started out the season 1-0 after the 8-2 win against Toledo in the Kajikawa Classic.
