LAFAYETTE, La. – It was a rough shooting night for the Texas State men's basketball team (18-12, 10-7 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon in a 67-54 loss to Louisiana (10-19, 7-9 Sun Belt) in the Cajundome. The loss also snapped the Bobcats' seven-game winning streak.
Â
"A tough loss for us. I think you have to give all the credit to Coach Q, his staff and players. They made it hard for us on both ends," said head coach
Terrence Johnson. "We struggled to get into a rhythm and they had a lot to do with that. We'll regroup and be ready for senior night on Friday."
Â
TXST made just 37.3% (19-for-51) of their shots and were 2-for-12 (16.7%) on three-pointers. The Ragin' Cajuns, on the other hand, connected on 48.9% (22-of-45) filed goals and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from beyond the arc.
Â
DJ Hall led Texas State with 18 points and six rebounds.
Mark Drone was the only other player in double-figures for the team with 10 points and he also dished out three assists.
Kaden Gumbs added nine points and recorded three of the Bobcats' five steals.
Â
It was a slow start offensively for Texas State as the team missed their first three shots that allowed Louisiana to score the first nine points of the contest. Breaking the scoring drought was Hall with a short jumper in the paint at the 16:15 mark.
Â
Hall's bucket would start a 7-0 run that would be capped off by two free throws from Drone to get within two. That would be as close as TXST would get for the half as the hosts stretched their lead to 29-11 with 4:59 left in the first half.
Â
Kyndall Davis hit a corner three with 38 seconds left in the period to make it a 16-point deficit but a jumper by Tood Jones, Jr. gave Louisiana a 34-18 lead heading into halftime.
Â
The Bobcats slowly chipped away and were able to get within single digits after
Jalen Bolden made a layup. Gumbs would knock down two free throws with 5:39 remaining to make it 53-45 deficit. However, that would be as close as TXST would get as they finished the game shooting 3-for-10 from the field.
Â
Next up for Texas State is the regular season finale on Friday against App State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from inside Strahan Arena.
