BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas State volleyball swept Lamar 3-0 in its lone exhibition match before the 2025 season gets underway.
The team's trip to Beaumont was highlighted by a .591 attack percentage from
Samantha Wunsch who swung for 13 kills and zero errors on 22 attacks. She rounded out her match with three blocks, four digs and an ace. That, paired with
Dylan Gilkey tallying 35 assists, two aces, six digs and three blocks helped the Bobcats to the clean sweep over the Cardinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Wunsch started off her night with eight kills in the first set alone as the Bobcats rolled through that set to a 25-14 win. Gilkey had 12 assists in the first set as well in her first outing as a Bobcat. The Bobcats put in the work defensively with three total team blocks and 15 digs to limit the Cardinal attack percentage to just .103.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair between the two sides, though. There were 16 tied scores and seven lead changes enroute to the Bobcats 25-23 set win. The Bobcats used 11 different players to switch up the team's look while still hitting .333 on the set. Gilkey added another 12 assists while six Bobcats combined for the team's 13 kills.
The Bobcats regained their heavy-hitting attack in the third set as the team swung .435 with 14 kills on 23 attacks in the third set. Again, it was an all-hands-on deck set for the Bobcats as those 14 kills came from eight different Bobcats. Texas State won set three by a match-best 25-12 scoreline.
Texas State finished the match with 9.0 team blocks, 36 digs and 39 assists in three sets.

UP NEXT
The Bobcats will see open the regular season at the UTSA Invitational next week. The Bobcats will play two matches, one vs Stephen F Austin and one vs UTSA, on Aug. 30. The first match, vs SFA, will be at 11 am and the Bobcats will face the Roadrunners at 6 pm. The second match versus the Roadrunners will be streamed on ESPN+.
