SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State tennis team wrapped up a record-setting regular season with a 4-0 sweep of Troy on Saturday morning at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. With the victory, the Bobcats improved to 16-5 on the season and 7-3 in Sun Belt Conference action. Troy fell to 11-9 and 6-5 in league play.
The 16 wins are a program record in a season for TXST, while the seven SBC wins have also extended the record. The Bobcats' nine wins at home are the most since 2012 (9-2 that season). TXST also finished the regular season tied for third in the conference standings, guaranteeing them the program's highest seed in the tournament, which was previously No. 5.
Texas State honored four seniors ahead of the win in
Callie Creath,
Sofia Fortuno,
Kiana Graham and
Maria Lora.
"So proud and excited for this team," head coach
Kendall Brooks said. "We really wanted to get the victory for the seniors on senior day and close out regular season play with a win. We knew it was going to be tough, and I think battling for that doubles point was huge, and then every player just stepped up in singles and got the job done. Anxious to see where this puts us for next week in the tournament, and excited to see what this team can do in the postseason."
The Bobcats grabbed the doubles point after an exciting tiebreaker on court two where
Maria Lora and
Chantajah Mills won 7-6 after an 8-6 tiebreaker decision. TXST went on to win in straight sets on courts one, five and four to pick up its fourth sweep in conference action this season.
