Bobcats Spoil League-Leading JMU’s Regular Season Finale in 2OT

SAN MARCOS, Texas – It took 10 extra minutes of play, but the Texas State men's basketball team knocked off the top team in the Sun Belt Conference in JMU, 102-93 (2OT), in Strahan Arena Friday night.

Tylan Pope led the Bobcats (16-15, 9-9 SBC) with a game-high 23 points, eclipsing the 1,000-career point and 500-season point threshold in the contest. Pope went 7-of-10 shooting, and 9-of-12 from the line, with 11 points coming in overtime. The redshirt-senior led five TXST players in double figures, joining him were Coleton Benson (21), Tyrel Morgan (19), Mark Drone (18) and Joshua O'Garro (12).

As a team, the Bobcats shot 57.8% (37-of-64) from the field in the contest, including a blistering 70.8% in the second half and 77.8% in overtime. TXST outscored the Dukes  (20-11, 13-5 SBC) 47-27 in bench points and 48-42 in points in the paint.

JMU opened the game on a 9-0 run and led for the remainder of the first half off 48% (12-of-25) shooting. Its largest lead came at the 4:36 mark as the visitors pulled away at 33-20 and ended up taking a 41-33 lead into the locker room.

The Bobcats got hot to open the second half, putting together their own 8-0 run to open the second 20. The second half saw nine lead changes, with JMU going up by as many as eight. Despite leading for just 2:38 of the second half, TXST secured a chance to win in overtime.

After each team failed to break the deadlock after the first five minutes, Texas State outscored JMU, 15-6, in the final five to halt a 10-game Sun Belt win streak for the Dukes.

The Bobcats honored six seniors ahead of the regular season ending victory and finished the regular season 16-15 overall and 9-9 in SBC action. They now await seeding for the Sun Belt Conference Championship March 4-10 in Pensacola, Florida.
