Men’s Hoops Victorius in Eighth Consecutive Home Opener

SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the eighth consecutive season, Texas State (1-1) won its home opener following a 114-55 victory over Texas A&M-San Antonio (1-3) on Wednesday night from Strahan Arena.

The 114 points are tied for the fifth most ever scored by the Bobcats with a game against Howard Payne on Feb. 21, 1959. The point total is the third highest in the Division I era. Only times TXST netted more as a D1 program was a 117-point output on Dec. 15, 2020, against Bethany College and a 126 in an overtime contest against Our Lady of the Lake on Nov. 24, 2010.

Five Bobcats finished in double-figures led by Mark Drone with 19 points. He knocked down 6-of-9 shots, including both of his three-point attempts, and was 5-for-6 at the free throw line.

Kaden Gumbs netted 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting and converted all five tries at the charity stripe. The junior also dished out eight assists, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals. Makai Will contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

Off the bench, Dimp Pernell scored 13 points while going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Robert Field totaled 11 points with all coming at the free throw line with an 11-of-12 performance. The freshman big man also blocked two shots.

Both Franck Emmou and DJ Hall scored nine points in their first starts of the season. Jaelyn Lee and Deke Thompson recorded season bests of eight and seven points, respectively.

It was a close contest early that saw the Jaguars take a 7-6 lead at the 16:43 mark. Gumbs made a fastbreak layup 80 seconds later to put TXST back in front and it would never look back. The Bobcats closed the half on a 14-2 run to take a 53-25 advantage into halftime.

Texas State outscored the visitors 61-30 in the second half. The largest lead of the game came with 3:05 remaining when Thompson knocked down a jumper to put the Bobcats in front by 63.

Next for TXST is a trip to New Orleans to take on Tulane on Saturday at 1 p.m.
