Conference Play Begins at Louisiana for Volleyball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State volleyball will start its run of Sun Belt Conference games this weekend, beginning with two versus the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Match one will be on Sept. 27 at 6 pm, with match two on Sept. 28 at 1 pm. 
 
Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
About Texas State
The Bobcats enter the week having finished non-conference play with a 6-5 record with wins over Oregon State, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, UTRGV, Texas Southern, Houston Christian and UTSA. The 'Cats started the season with 13 consecutive road games, coming to an end with these two matches in Louisiana. The team will have its 2024 season home opener in Strahan Arena on Oct. 4 vs Troy.
 
After a great weekend in El Paso, Sam Wunsch enters the week as Sun Belt Offensive Player the Week. Alongside her is MJ McCurdy to leads the team in kills with 130 and setting them both is 5th year senior Ryann Torres who leads the team in assists with 346. On the defensive side of things is libero Alyssa Ortega who recently tallied her 1000th career dig and sits with a team-best 146 this season. Jade Defraeye also helps out defensively with 43.0 blocks so far this season.
 
In the final week of non-conference play, Texas State went 2-1 in the Southwest Showdown with wins over Texas A&M – Corpus and UTRGV where the Bobcats swept both in three sets. The win over TAMUCC was head coach Sean Huiet's 100th of his career as he now sits with a 101-42 record in his fifth season with the Bobcats.
 
About Louisiana
The Ragin' Cajuns come into the weekend on a two-game win streak after winning both their games in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic versus Jacksonville State and Florida A&M in five sets. The Ragin' Cajuns also have wins over Houston and Murray State. All four of Louisiana's wins have come in five sets.
 
Leading the attack for the Ragin' Cajuns is Cailin Demps who has 134 kills, and Jazmine Gaston with 123. The attack is being set by Megan Hawkins who has 250 assists on the season. Starting at libero for the Ragin' Cajuns has been Sun Belt Preseason Libero of the Year Mio Yamamoto who has tallied 214 digs this season. Helping the block is Cami Hicks who has 59.0 blocks this season.

Louisiana is led by 4th year head coach Kristi Gray who has a 53-44 record in her time at the helm of the Ragin' Cajuns.
 
Series History
Texas State leads the all-time series 26-4. Last season saw the series split 1-1 with the Bobcats winning 3-1 one night and falling in five the next night. Texas State had not lost in five matches before the loss last season.
 
On the road, Texas State is 11-2 with their last loss coming in 2019 on Nov. 3 by a 2-3 scoreline.
