Golden Eagles Await in Sun Belt Tournament Second Round Contest

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Thursday will see Texas State (15-17) take on Southern Miss (16-15) at 5 p.m. from inside the Pensacola Bay Center in a second round game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

About Texas State
The Bobcats are coming off their second straight overtime victory, a 92-83 contest against Old Dominion, on Tuesday. It was the third time that the program has played back-to-back overtime games and the first since 2015. Coleton Benson led the way off the bench with a career-high 28 points as he went 14-for-14 from the free throw line. Adding 19 points each were Jordan Mason and Brandon Love.
 
Since Davion Sykes entered the starting lineup at the beginning of February, he has been a force to deal with for opposing teams. The sophomore is averaging 13.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while going 56-for-110 (50.9%) from the floor in that time. He has six double-doubles in that time with TXST winning each of those contests he has done so.
 
Overall, Jordan Mason leads the team at 12.6 ppg and is making a team best 78.4% of his free throws. The sophomore is also first on the squad with 35 steals and second with 73 assists. Brandon Love enters Thursday netting 10.6 ppg and grabbing 5.5 rpg. He has blocked 47 shots, which ranks fourth in the Sun Belt and is the fourth most by a Bobcat in a season.
 
Both Coleton Benson (8.8 ppg) and Dylan Dawson (8.2 ppg) are threats from beyond the arc. Benson has knocked down 38 three-pointers at a team-high 39.6% mark. Dawson is shooting 33.6% from deep with a team best 48 made triples.
 
About Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles ended the regular season dropping two straight games and three of their last four. The lone win in that time was a victory at home over Louisiana. USM is 5-12 when playing away from Hattiesburg with two victories coming against conference opponents.
 
Four players are averaging double-figures led by Austin Crowley at 16.0 ppg. He has also made a team-high 115 shots, 53 three-pointers, 116 free throws, dished out 100 assists and recorded 36 steals.
 
The trio of Andre Curbelo (13.9), Victor Hart (13.2) and Donovan Ivory (13.1) are netting over 13 points a contest. Hart is grabbing a team-high 6.5 rpg while Ivory is shooting a team best 40.9% from beyond the arc and 89.2% at the charity stripe. Victor Iwuakor has blocked 69 shots.
 
All-Time Series vs. Golden Eagles
Southern Miss holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. The teams split the regular season meetings with the home team winning each time. Texas State won 60-55 on Feb. 3 and the Golden Eagles claimed a 78-74 contest on Feb. 17.
