Men’s Basketball Opens Sun Belt Championship Against Old Dominion

SAN MARCOS, Texas – It's déjà vu for the Texas State men's basketball team. The Bobcats (14-17) enter the Sun Belt Conference Championship as the 11th seed for the second straight year and will take on 14th seed Old Dominion (7-24), a team that TXST did not face in the regular season, for a 7:30 p.m. tip from the Pensacola Bay Center.

Fans can catch the action on ESPN+ and on the Varsity Sports Network with Clint Shields on the call. Live stats will also be available to follow.

About Texas State
Texas State ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak. Capping it off was an overtime victory over Troy, the No. 3 seed in the tournament. When playing in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament, the Bobcats have gone 4-0 including a win last season over Georgia State.

Since Davion Sykes entered the starting lineup at the beginning of February, he has been a force to deal with for opposing teams. The sophomore is averaging 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while going 52-for-101 (51.5%) from the floor in that time. He has also recorded six double-doubles in that time and TXST has won every game in which he has achieved the feat.

Overall, Jordan Mason leads the team at 12.3 ppg and is making a team best 78.8% of his free throws. The sophomore is also first on the squad with 33 steals and second with 66 assists. Brandon Love enters Saturday netting 10.3 ppg and grabbing 5.5 rpg. He has blocked 45 shots, which ranks fourth in the Sun Belt and is the fourth most by a Bobcat in a season.

Kaden Gumbs is dishing out 3.5 assists a contest, which ranks fifth in the conference. His 29 steals are second on the Bobcats while he is scoring 9.1 ppg.

Both Coleton Benson and Dylan Dawson are threats from beyond the arc. Benson has knocked down 34 three-pointers at a team-high 38.6% mark. Dawson is shooting 33.6% from deep with a team best 47 made triples.

About Old Dominion
The Monarchs ended the regular season by dropping two straight games and eight of their last nine. The lone win in that time was a 75-59 win at home over Coastal Carolina on Feb. 24. The only other conference wins were a season sweep of Marshall.

Chance Jenkins leads the team in scoring (16.2), made baskets (162), made three-pointers (46), made free throws (117), free throw percentage (72.7) and assists (79). He is second on the team with 26 blocks and tied for third with 28 steals. Tyrone Williams is the only other player with a double-digit scoring average of 12.7. He leads the team at 5.5 rpg and 41 steals. A team-high 27 blocks have been recorded by R.J. Blakney.

All-Time Series vs. Monarchs
Last season was the first time the teams faced off with the teams splitting the meetings. Texas State defeated ODU in the second round of the conference tournament while the Monarchs won on a buzzer beater in San Marcos during the regular season.
