SAN MARCOS, Texas – Bobcats hold #2 Texas to one-run game as the Bobcats fell narrowly 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Â
Despite the result, Mullins pitched a complete game from the circle and limited a traditionally prolific Texas offenses to just one run off six hits. She struck out five batters and walked two in the seven innings.
The Bobcats will return head back out on the road for four games in a tournament at Texas Tech. The Bobcats will face New Mexico State and UTEP twice this weekend on March 1 and 2. Friday's games will be at 4:30 and 7 pm, Saturday's are at 11:30 and 2.
Â
What Head Coach Ricci Woodard said:Â "I thought we competed well. That's a good ball club over there and I thought Mullins threw the ball as well as she could possibly throw to keep us in the ball game and give us a chance to win. We had a chance to win. You can't really ask for more than that except maybe two runs to their one.
How it Happened
While settling into the game, Mullins walked the first batter as she started in the circle for the Bobcats. After that she struck out two batters after catching the leadoff batter leaving early to get out of the first inning with two strikeouts and no hits.
Â
The Bobcats went down in order on two ground outs and a strike out to bring the Longhorns back to bat.
Â
Mullins was able to force Reese Atwood into a ground out. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week would go 0-3 on Mullins on the night, one of just two opponents for the Longhorns to not allow Atwood a hit or RBI in a game so far this season. Mullins would get a third strikeout in three pitches on Vivianna Martinez before giving up a hit. At the end of two the Longhorns still had no runs.
Â
Anna Jones led off the 2
nd for the Bobcats with asingle to left field. She was unable to score after
Karmyn Bass popped up and
Piper Randolph and
JJ Smith struck out.
Â
Mullins gave up another run and a walk in the third, but after
Megan Kelnar threw the runner out as she tried to steal, no runs would get batted in until the top of the fourth.
Â
The Longhorns scored their lone run off a single to left. Stewart had gotten on base from a double down the right field line, the lone extra base hit of the night. From there, she score don the single for the lone run of the night.
Â
The Bobcats thought nearly had an answer when
Ciara Trahan was walked, advance to second on a sac bunt from Vanderford and third on a wild pitch, but was unable to bring in the run.
Anna Jones ground out and Bass flew out to end the inning, stranding Trahan on third.
Â
The 'Cats didn't earn another hit until the 6
th inning when
Hannah Earls singled down the left field line. She would steal second and advance to third on an error, but Jones grounded out to end the inning without scoring Earls.
Â
Mullins was able to get three straight ground outs in the top of the 7
th to keep the one-run score line. The Bobcats also went down in order, though, to end the game 1-0, the first time this season the Bobcats had been shutout.
Â
The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, March 1 at 4:30 pm against UTEP in Lubbock, Texas.Â
