Men’s Hoops Claims 68-59 Contest at Georgia State

ATLANTA – Four of the five starters for Texas State (12-17, 5-11 Sun Belt) scored in double-figures as the team went into Atlanta and defeated Georgia State (13-15, 7-9 Sun Belt) 68-59 Saturday afternoon at the GSU Convocation Center.

"Another hard fought game that required the best version of ourselves at times. Credit goes to our guys for fighting and competing at the level in which we needed to in order to pull off the victory," said head coach Terrence Johnson. "This was a compelte team effort and hopefully it gives us confidence moving forward."
 
Davion Sykes recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also led all players with three steals and dished out a team-high three assists.
 
The top scorer on the day was Coleton Benson. Making his second start of the season, the Austin, Texas native totaled 17 points of 5-of-12 shooting with four made three-pointers.
 
Jordan Mason added 15 points behind a 7-for-9 day at the charity stripe. The sophomore added two assists and two steals as well. Brandon Love netted 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots to increase his season total to 44.
 
Coming just shy of double-digits was Christian Turner, scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting including a made trey. He finished with two steals along with Dontae Horne.
 
A back-and-forth affair early, the Panthers would take their largest lead of the game at 22-17 on consecutive fastbreak three-pointers by Dwon Odom and Brenden Tucker. After a timeout, the Bobcats scored six straight capped off by a four-point play from Benson.
 
Mason made a layup for the final basket of the opening half with 37 seconds left on the clock to send TXST into the break ahead 31-30.
 
Nine of the first 12 points in the second half were scored by Texas State with the last five coming from Benson to make it a seven-point advantage for the visitors.
 
Despite not making a field goal over the final 6:35, the Bobcats sealed the game at the free throw line. TXST went 14-for-15 in that time.
