MOBILE, Ala. – The four-game winning streak for Texas State came to an end Thursday night at the Mitchell Center as South Alabama claimed a 72-55 victory.
Â
"It was a tough game and we never got settled. We came out flat and were unable to recover," said head coach
Terrence Johnson. "Credit South Alabama as they did a great job of setting the tone and being disruptive. We're going to have to regroup and respond on Saturday."
Â
The result drops TXST to 11-15 on the season and 4-9 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Jaguars are now 13-13 overall and 5-8 in league play.
Â
Brandon Love led the Bobcats with 13 points as he went 3-for-5 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. He was one of three TXST players to grab a team-high five rebounds along with
Davion Sykes and
Christian Turner. Both Love and
Kaden Gumbs dished out a team best two assists on the night.
Â
Sykes scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game with 12 points. The sophomore also recorded a team-high two steals. Also reaching double-digits while coming off the bench was
Jordan Mason with 11.
Â
It was a slow start for the Bobcats as the Jaguars scored the first eight points until
Brandon Love made a layup at the 15:14 mark. Back-to-back layups from
Davion Sykes and Love cut the deficit to 12-8 with 9:35 left in the first half. That would be as close as TXST would get the rest of the period as USA used a 19-4 run to take a commanding lead.
Â
The closest Texas State got in the second half was 15, which happened three times. The last was at the 10:38 mark when Sykes completed an old-fashion three-point play to make it 52-37.
Â
Next for the Bobcats is a game at Southern Miss on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. from inside Reed Green Coliseum.
