Home Winning Streak Snapped by Mavs

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State's 11-game home winning streak ended on Sunday as UT Arlington claimed an 80-72 victory in Strahan Arena. The streak was the fifth longest in the Bobcats' Division I era and 11th longest overall.

With the result, TXST dropped to 8-5 on the season while the Mavericks improved to 7-7.

Tyrel Morgan paced the Bobcats with a 22-point, 8-rebound, 4-steal performance that saw him score 14 of his points in the second half. The forward was 9-of-15 from the field and knocked down 4-of-6 free throws.

Also reaching double-figures was Tylan Pope with 17 points with him going 9-for-10 at the charity stripe.

Kaden Gumbs set a career-high with nine assists. He finished with more assists than UTA (7) did on the afternoon. Coming off the bench, Coleton Benson netted nine points with two made three-pointers.

The contest was tight until the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run over a 4:50 minute span to go up 28-19. Capping off the scoring stretch was Morgan converting an old-fashion three-point play.

Benson knocked down his first trey of the game with 1:49 left in the first half. The bucket gave the Bobcats their largest lead of the game at 39-27.

UTA would end the half by scoring the final five points to make it a seven-point contest. The visitors would then open the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points. Eventually, the Mavs tied the game at 49-49 with a converted and-1 opportunity by Lance Ware.

The teams would trade buckets over the next five-plus minutes. Texas State went cold from the field, which allowed UTA to go on a 13-3 run to go up by 10 with 3:24 left on the clock.

Pope scored five consecutive points to cut the deficit in half. It would not be enough as the Mavs allowed the Bobcats to get just two free throws in the final minute of action to seal the game.

Next up for TXST is a four-game road swing that beings on Thursday at Marshall with tip set for 6 p.m. CT.
