Winning Streak Snapped at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Texas State saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena as Florida Atlantic came away with an 89-80 win.

"It was a hard game as FAU is a good team. At times I thought there size and length disrupted us at times and took us out of rhythm. But I thought we had opportunities in this game," said head coach Terrence Johnson. "A few too many turnovers at critical times and then we didn't go as well as we expected to."

"I think you got to give them the credit. They had a really good game plan and pressured us at the right times to make things hard on us. I do like where we are at. We got to regroup and respond in conference play coming up on the 21st."

With the result, the Bobcats are now 7-4 on the season while the Owls improve to 7-5.

Five Bobcats finished in double-figures led by 19 from Tyrel Morgan. The forward was 8-of-11 from the field and 2-for-3 on three-pointers. He also grabbed six rebounds with three on each end of the court, dished out five assists and recorded a steal.

Tylan Pope added 14 points, five rebounds and blocked a season-high three shots. Joshua O'Garro netted 13 points behind three made treys and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds while also posting two rejections.

Kaden Gumbs netted 10 points behind six made free throws. The sophomore also finished with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Coming off the bench, Coleton Benson knocked down three shots from beyond the arc on his way to totaling 11 points.

As a team, Texas State was 29-of-56 (51.8%) from the field, 9-of-20 (45.0%) on three-pointers and converted 13-of-15 (86.7%) free throws. The team outrebounded FAU 37-26 but lost the turnover battle 17-6, which led to 17 points for the hosts.

It was a fast paced and high scoring first half that saw both teams shoot over 50 percent from the field and go 4-for-10 on three-pointers. The Bobcats only led for 2:42 with the largest advantage being at 8-5 following a jumper from Christian Turner.

The Owls largest lead of the opening half was five points at 37-32 following a 7-0 run. Scoring eight of 11 points in a 1:38 span, TXST tied the contest contest at 40. Capping the scoring stretch was Drue Drinnon as he hit a floater at the 1:11 mark. A trey by KyKy Tandy would be the final points of the period as the hosts took a 43-40 lead into halftime.

A 10-4 scoring stretch that started with five consecutive points by O'Garro saw TXST tie the game at 55-55 with 13:11 on the clock. However, FAU would score eight of the next 10 points over the next three-plus minutes to take the lead for good. The Owls would eventually stretch the lead to double-digits at 81-71 with two minutes to play.

Two three-pointers by Benson and one from O'Garro helped bring the deficit to within five as 37 ticks remained. FAU got two free throws and a dunk to close out the game.

Next up for the Bobcats is the Sun Belt Conference opener next Saturday against Georgia Southern in Strahan Arena. The game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. tip.
