SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Texas State fell, 23-17, at home to Louisiana in a Tuesday night, Sun Belt Conference West Division Clash.Â
The Bobcats (4-4, 2-2) struck first in the contest, going ahead on a pair of
Mason Shipley field goals to open the scoring. However, Louisiana (7-1, 4-0) scored on a 64-yard rush to close the first quarter and doubled their total to take a 14-6 lead into the half.
TXST was able to tie the score at 14 off an
Ismail Mahdi one-yard run in the third, but Louisiana went ahead 17-14 and never relinquished the lead.
Jordan McCloud went 12-for-18 passing for 88 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter. RJ Martinez entered and finished 11-for-14 for 113 yards and an interception.
Mahdi finished with 82 yards on the ground and a TD, while adding 17 yards off three catches and 16 yards off kick return.
Kole Wilson led receivers with 57 yards.
Defensively,
Ryan Nolan registered a season-high seven tackles to lead the team, while
Steven Parker had five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Texas State returns to action November 9 at ULM at 11 a.m.. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

On where this loss puts Texas State in the Sun Belt West...
Yeah, it's definitely disappointing. I think we're gonna have to dig deep and know that we still have a lot to play for, and we have got to go out there and go to work and make sure we handle our business and stay together.
On the Louisiana interception...
Yeah that's tough. You're going down to score like you said, we have a lot of momentum and we were executing the offense really well and the tipped pass there they made... you've got to give that guy a lot of credit. He made a play on the tip and then a heck of an interception, you just got to go back to work. That's all we can do... and we still have to get bowl eligible.
On play in the red zone...
You know, we were moving the ball well and like you said, we were kicking too many field goals and have got to put the ball in the end zone there against a good team like Louisiana.
