SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior forward
Brandon Love nearly recorded a double-double Saturday afternoon as he finished with a career-high 23 points and nine rebounds. However, Texas State (6-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) came out on the losing end of a 79-75 contest against Marshall (8-8, 3-0 Sun Belt) in Strahan Arena.
Â
Love made a career best 11 shots on 13 attempts while also recording two blocks and one steal defensively. With his two rejections, the Houston native is up to 34 blocks on the season to tie for the 10th most in a campaign in program history with Tony Bishop's 2010-11 season.
Â
Kaden Gumbs matched his career-high of 15 points with most of his damage coming at the foul line with a 9-for-10 day. The freshman also finished with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Also reaching double-figures was
Jordan Mason with 11 points while also handing out a game-high seven assists.
Â
Netting eight points off the bench for the second straight game was
Davion Sykes. He was 3-of-6 from the field and made his first career three-pointer. The sophomore added six rebounds and two steals to his stat line.
Â
As a team, the Bobcats shot 46.7% (28-of-60) but were limited to 37.9% (11-of-29) in the final 20 minutes. The Thundering Herd took advantage of TXST turnover with 18 of their points coming off them while just seven points were netted by the Bobcats after Marshall turned the ball over.
Â
Texas State jumped out to a 10-2 advantage in the first three minutes with half of the points coming courtesy of Love. The lead would eventually grow to 12 on a
Dylan Dawson jumper halfway through the period. The Herd would eventually chip away and cut the Bobcats' advantage to 40-37 at the break.
Â
Coming out to start the second half, TXST went on an 11-2 run over the first 3:14 to again go up by 12. Capping off the run was a Dawson three-pointer from the top of the arc.
Â
Marshall would go on to make seven straight shots including three consecutive attempts from beyond the arc to pull to within 59-57 at the 11:54 mark.
Â
After a layup by Love extended the advantage back to six, the Herd scored seven straight points to take their first lead of the game on two free throws from Obinna Anochili-Killen. Gumbs would knock down a shot at the line to tie the game and Sykes converted his lone three-point attempt of the game to put the Bobcats back in front 67-64.
Â
Over the next 4:47, the visitors tallied 12 of the next 16 points to go up by five. Gumbs would knock down two charity stripe attempts and Mason hit a pull-up jumper to get the Bobcats to within two with 39 ticks remaining. Two free throws along with a TXST turnover and missed shot sealed the game for Marshall.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats are two road games with the first taking place at Arkansas State on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. as the TXST women will take on the Red Wolves in Jonesboro at 5 p.m.
