Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Megan Webb

Women's Basketball Falls to Old Dominion

SAN MARCOS, Texas  Despite a strong first half showing, Texas State women's basketball suffered a 66-58 loss to Old Dominion on Wednesday afternoon. With 3,000 kids in attendance for the Bobcats annual 'Kids Game' the crowd was a difference maker in the Bobcats 33-22 lead at halftime.

A 17-point second quarter was the highlight of the night for the Bobcats as they were able to hold ODU to just eight points that quarter and take an 11 point lead into the halftime break. The Bobcats shot 44.4% in the second while the Monarchs shot just 20.0%. The Bobcats 17 points that quarter came from six different scorers, too as all players got involved on the ball.

The Bobcats answered well after ODU went on an 8-0 run to start the game. After starting at a deficit, the Bobcats went on an 11-2 run to make the score 11-10 off a pair of free throws from Jaylin Foster. Foster would go on to have 12 points and four rebounds in this game.

Sierra Dickson and Morgan Hill had solid opening quarters for the Bobcats as Hill went for four points and two rebounds while Dickson got five points. At the end of the first quarter, Texas State had overcome the early deficit and led 16-14 thanks to a Dickson three pointer buzzer beater.
To begin the Bobcats dominant second quarter, they started on their own 8-0 run. After allowing ODU to start the game on a run of their own, the Bobcats bounced back. Ja'Niah Henson hit yet another halftime buzzer beater for the Bobcats to give Texas State a 33-22 lead at the half.

ODU had the momentum out of the halftime break, though. It was a battle for the Bobcats to stay in the game, which they did through most the third quarter, but ODU had cut the 'Cats lead down to four by the end of it. While the Bobcats shot just 3-11, ODU shot 8-17 for 20 points in the third. Headed into the fourth, momentum was on their side.

Two minutes into the fourth, the Monarchs tied up the game and the Bobcats were unable to reclaim the lead. With ODU shooting 6-9 and going 12-14 from the free throw line, they were able to come out on top at the end and win 66-58.

WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID: "First and foremost I want to thank the city and the way they came out for us. It was really nice to be in that atmosphere. Hats off to our administration, our Athletic Director Don, he started this as an associate AD and it's really blossomed with the kids coming in from the private schools and San Marcos ISD. Just having a blast and really being able to showcase our university in a fun way, through sport and them see these young women.  It's good to show them that sport can be fun. We felt the crowd. I felt like we were locked into the game plan going into the day, clearly understanding that they're the No. 1 defensive team and we're right there at No. 2. It was going to be a dog-eat-dog battle, and it was."
