‘This Feeling is Incredible’: Bobcat Volleyball Sweeps #13 Houston

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State volleyball earns its first ranked win of the season after sweeping #13 Houston on Saturday night inside Strahan Arena to close the 2023 Texas State Invite.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-1 on the season and remain undefeated at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Texas State volleyball came into the Strahan Arena on Saturday evening with one goal in mind: leave no doubt.

It's been the mantra all year for the Bobcats, but with a nationally ranked opponent on the other side of the court and with a chance to prove what this team is made of, they knew tonight was about finding a win.

"We just followed that scouting report," said senior Ryann Torres. "It all starts from the beginning of the week in practices and being on the same page as everyone. Having uplifting talks as a team and we just came in here today with great energy when we walked in and just, we felt good."

Straight from set one the Bobcats took a lead. Capping off a 4-0 start with a KJ Johnson service ace, the Bobcats controlled the match from the start. The Cougars never came within two points of the Bobcats through the entire first set. Samantha Wunsch had four monster kills in the first set to help propel the Bobcats to a 25-18 set one win.

Houston would win the first point in set two, but that was the only lead the visitors would hold for the duration of the game inside Strahan Arena. Wunsch answered the point with a kill, followed by a Sophie Childs kill to take a 2-1 lead. From there, the Bobcats inched towards the set win. Houston was able to draw things close again, bringing the score 11-10, but an 8-1 run by the Bobcats would terminate their hopes of a comeback.

Highlighted by a perfect 1.000 set from Sophie Childs, the Bobcats won set two 25-22.

Headed to set three the Bobcats were all business. The Bobcats started 8-2 on the set, with three of the points being three-straight service aces from Alyssa Ortega. That forced the Cougars into a time out, but the Bobcats kept firing on all cylinders.
KJ Johnson hit 7-0-8 in set three to steamroll the Bobcats way to the sweep and the victory. The outside hitter hit .370 on the day and lead the team in kills with 12.

A massive swing off Ryann Torres' 36th assist of the night from Bailey Hanner was the final nail in the coffin against the Cougars as the Bobcats finished their sweep of the #13 program in the nation.

"We are so excited," said sophomore Samantha Wunsch. "We really showed up today and played an amazing match. Everybody just did their job so well. We came together as a team, everybody stayed up the whole time, this feeling is incredible.""

For head coach Sean Huiet, this win was his sixth win against a ranked opponent of his career, his second against a non-Sun Belt Conference school. But for him, this win was a statement about how good his team this year is going to be, that the new, young group he has is a force to be reckoned with.

"This feels really good," said head coach Sean Huiet. "This team has been through a lot. We have a lot of young kids that wanted to prove a point that they came to Texas State because they knew what level we were at. We graduated a lot but we knew what was coming back, so to come out here today and play like they did, it's really awesome."
