SAN MARCOS, Texas – Five Bobcats, including four on the defense, were named to the 2023 PFF Preseason All-Sun Belt Teams as the organization released its first, second and third team honors.
Â
Jordan Revels was named to the PFF's preseason all-conference first team as an edge rusher while three members from the Texas State secondary – cornerbacks Alonzo Edwards Jr. (second team) and
Kaleb Ford-Dement (third) and safety
Tory Spears (third) – joined Revels from the Bobcat defense.
Â
Wide receiver
Ashtyn Hawkins was named second team and the lone representative from the Texas State offense.
Â
With the four selections on the defense, the Bobcats were tied for the third-most selections on that side of the ball on the PFF's preseason Sun Belt honors.
Â
Revels, who was named preseason all-conference second team earlier this week by the conference's coaches, was the second-highest rated edge rusher in the Sun Belt last season, according to PFF. He was also the sixth-highest rated defensive player overall in the conference (min. 500 snaps played).
Â
Revels had 37 total pressures in 2022, including 4.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. He finished second on the team in TFLs with 11.0.
Â
Both Edwards Jr. and Spears return to the Texas State defense after being a part of one of the best defensive groups in Texas State's FBS history in 2022. Edwards Jr. was top-15 in PFF defensive grades among Sun Belt cornerbacks last season and surrendered the seventh-fewest receiving yards among the same group (min. 500 snaps). He was also seventh in the conference in yards after catch allowed. Spears, meanwhile, was the highest rated safety in the Sun Belt by PFF in rush defense. He finished third on the team on tackles despite missing two games.
Â
Ford-Dement enters his first season as a Bobcat after transferring from Washington State. The former All-Conference USA selection is coming off a medical redshirt season, but he has played 24 career games at the FBS level. In addition to the PFF honors, he has picked up preseason accolades from
Athlon Sports and
Phil Steele this offseason.
Â
Hawkins, an All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention a season ago, has earned preseason all-conference honors as a wide receiver by three organizations this summer. He is coming off a 2022 season in which he had 56 catches for 587 yards and 7 touchdowns in 9 games. His 56 receptions are tied for 10th-most in program history while he finished 19th in the nation in receptions per game.
Â
The Bobcats are set to report for fall camp on Aug. 1 while official practices will start on Aug. 2.
