SAN MARCOS, Texas – In front of the 4
th largest crowd in Bobcat Stadium history of 1,027 people, Texas State softball was stopped by #8 Texas. Despite a close game through the opening four innings, a three-run fifth inning by the Longhorns was enough to shut down the Bobcats hope of a comeback.
Tori McCann started off in the circle where she didn't allow a hit in the opening inning. From there, the Bobcats got a hit in the first plate appearance from
Piper Randolph. She advanced when
Sara Vanderford was walked and the pair advanced on
Anna Jones ground out.
Katarina Zarate struck out swinging to end the inning, though.
"We have to capitalize in the first inning, which we didn't," said head coach
Ricci Woodard. "With runners in scoring position, we have to more of the aggressor."
Texas took the lead in the second inning off a home run to left field. The Longhorns would get two more hits off that inning, but no more runs.
After just one hit in the second for the Bobcats and two singles given up in the third, Woodard opted to make the change and bring on
Jessica Mullins.
Mullins wouldn't allow a hit until the 6
th inning, which is where the Longhorns hit their stride.
Three back-to-back-to-back singles saw the Longhorns get their first run of the inning. From there, Katie Cimusz singles to centerfield which allowed two more runs for the Longhorns. After six innings the Longhorns held a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.
"When you give up four earned runs and you don't score any earned runs, you're probably going to get beat," said Woodard. "I don't think there was any secrets to the game. I thought we played a decent game; we just didn't score any runs and they came up with some really key hits."
The key hits would be the difference maker in this game as the Longhorns would out-hit the Bobcats 10-5 and win 4-0 on the night.
Despite the result on the field, Bobcat softball stadium recorded its 4
th largest crowd in ball park history for the I-35 matchup. A crowd of 1,000+ people showed up for the Wednesday night affair. The Bobcats will return home on April 21 for a weekend series with ULM.
Before that, though, the Bobcats will now head to Lafayette for a three-game series with Louisiana beginning April 14 at 6 p.m. (CT) with that game available to stream on ESPN+
