Softball Comes from Behind for First Road Win of Conference Play

Boone, NC – Texas State softball notched its first road win of conference play in its Friday evening game with App State. A come-from-behind 4-3 victory with the winning run in the seventh inning is what it would take for the Bobcats to open their three-game series with a win.

After giving up a 2 RBI home run in the first inning, the Bobcats brought back a run in the second inning. Sara Vanderford scored off Bass' ground out after her double to get on base. From there, the Bobcats kept fighting back for a win.

After Head Coach Ricci Woodard preached the importance of hitting the right pitches, that's what freshman Katarina Zarate did to level the game for the Bobcats.

Zarate led off for the Bobcats in the third inning and hit her second home run of the season to right field. Her last homer came in the team's 9-0 routing of Penn on March 3, 2023.

The Bobcats took the lead in the fourth inning when JJ Smith reached on a fielding error, allowing Anna Jones to advance home.

In the fifth inning, App State hit its third home run of the game to make things level at three apiece again. That is where the scoring would end for the Mountaineers.

Presley Glende came in midway through the sixth inning to close out the game for the Bobcats. This would be the Bobcats fourth different pitcher to see time in the last three games as head coach Ricci Woodard uses the depth of her pitching staff. Glende had no one hit off her and got a strikeout in the five batters she'd face.

The Bobcats would road back in the top of the 7th. It started with the first hit from JJ SmithCiara Trahan would hit her lone hit of the game that ultimately was the game-deciding hit. Sydney Harvey, who pinch ran for Smith, would advance home on Trahan's double to score the winning run for the Bobcats.

Harvey's run to win the game for the Bobcats was the fourth of her career. Additionally, this was Glende's first win of the 2023 season from the mound.

The Bobcats are now 6-0 all-time at Sywassink / Lloyd Family Stadium and improve to 21-14-1 on the season.

UP NEXT: The Bobcats will face the Mountaineers again tomorrow, April 1st at 2 p.m. (ET). After the series with App State the team will return home for a weekend series with Southern Miss beginning on April 6th. The series will be three games with the first pitch on Thursday at 6 pm (CT).
