Bobcats Fall 7-0 in Series Finale Against South Alabama

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball dropped its series with South Alabama after suffering a 7-0 loss in Sunday afternoon's series finale.

After giving up a run, two hits and an error in the first inning, the Bobcats knew they were going to have to put up a good fight against the Jaguars.

In the top of the third inning, head coach Ricci Woodard elected to make a pitching change, bringing on Jessica Mullins for Tori McCann. McCann was coming off pitching two innings in the Bobcats 6-2 win the day prior.

"[McCann getting subbed] was the plan all along," said Woodard. "She was only going to go through the lineup one time, so it just went one batter earlier."

The Jaguars added another run to the scoreboard in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bobcats got on base when Sara Vanderford rallied for a walk after a 12-pitch at-bat.

"Sara [Vanderford's] always going to compete," said head coach Ricci Woodard. "She's always going to give us a chance any time she's in the box. But we have to have some other people that are going to compete the same way."

After Vanderford's walk, Piper Randolph got one of the Bobcats hits on the day when she hit off a single to right field. Karmyn Bass struck out on the next at-bat to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Jaguars started to hit their stride. After capitalizing on a fielding error, the Jaguars started their path to a four-run inning. At the end of five innings the Bobcats trailed 6-0.

"Games aren't going to get any easier," said Woodard. "We must do some things differently. We have to make some adjustments. We can't come out and get beaten in every area of the game and think we're going to win."

In the top of the seventh inning the Jaguars were able to capitalize off another Bobcat error to score their final seventh and final run.

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Bass tripled to right field, her first triple of her career. Bass' triple wouldn't be enough to put a run on the board when JJ Smith would fly out on the next play to end the game.

The Bobcats will prepare to host Big 12 foe Baylor for a midweek game on March 29th at 6 p.m. Following the midweek matchup, the Bobcats will head to Boone, NC for a weekend series with Appalachian State.
