Softball Finds 3-1 Win Over No. 9 Alabama in Split Day at Bevo Classic

AUSTIN, TX — The Bobcats had a doubleheader slate for day two of the Bevo Classic where they saw a 4-3 loss to Wisconsin before a top-10 upset against No. 9 Alabama, winning 3-1 to close off the day.

GAME 1: TXST 3, Wisconsin 4

The Bobcats got off to a quick start, scoring on just the third batter of the day. Ciara Trahan got on base off a wild pitch and from there advanced to home off Piper Randolph's single and an error by Wisconsin's centerfielder.

Anna Jones hit a single on the next play that allowed Randolph to score as well and the Bobcats lead after half an inning played.

The Badgers, however, were also quick out of the game. Wisconsin's first batter of the day hit a single to right center and from there they were able to score four runs in the opening inning.

Karmyn Bass would score once more in the second inning off a Hannah Earls double, but that would be all the scoring wrote for the Bobcats in game one. The Badgers had four more hits in the game but weren't able to find another run and would take the 4-3 result on the day.

GAME 2: TXST 3, Alabama 1
The Bobcats were able to get a hit off to open the inning against Alabama, but the momentum was truly set when Jessica Mullins got behind the mound in the bottom of the first.

Mullins threw the first of her eventual eight strikeouts against Alabama's leadoff batter to start the game off. From there, the game went into the Bobcats hands.

In the top of the second inning, Sara Vanderford hit a bomb to left field. This was Vanderford's third homer of the year and her first of the Bevo Classic.

After Vanderford's homerun it was back to Mullins on the mound who went three up and three out with one strikeout in the bottom of the second which got the Bobcats back up to bat with a chance to extend their lead.

Hannah Earls would get the second run for the Bobcats after singling through the left side, she would score after a Randolph ground out and an error by Alabama's shortstop.

Mullins once again changed the momentum for the Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth when she struck out all three batters for Alabama. From there, Mullins allowed just one more hit in the remainder of the game and had three more strikeouts to close the game.

Texas State got its final run of the game in the top of the seventh when Bass singled through the right side. On the throws Bass and Zarate advanced and Randolph would go home to cap off the scoring.

Alabama looked to fight back in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short. Shipman doubled and eventually scored off two fly outs, but that would be the only run of the game for Crimson Tide as Mullins struck out their final batter to clinch the 3-1 win against the No. 9 team in the nation.

The Bobcats will return to action tomorrow against Texas at 3 p.m. at McCombs Field.

Notes to Know:
  • The Bobcats win against Alabama was the team's first win against a ranked team since beating No. 10 Oregon 5-1 on May 21, 2021 in the 2021 NCAA Regionals.

  • Alabama is the highest ranked team the Bobcats have beaten since beating No. 8 Louisiana 14-13 on 3/28/2015.
