SAN MARCOS, Texas – Five players for Texas State finished in double-figures as the team battled to a 66-62 win Thursday night in Strahan Arena over Arkansas State in front of 2,638 fans on Black Out night.
Â
The win sees the Bobcats snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves are now 10-16 on the year and 2-11 in conference play.
Â
Pacing TXST was
Tyrel Morgan with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting with two made three-pointers. He also recorded two steals and blocked a shot.
Nighael Ceaser netted 11 points while making 5-of-7 shot attempts. The senior grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and matched his career best of five blocks.
Â
The trio of
Davion Coleman,
Mason Harrell and
Nate Martin all scored 10 points. Coleman posted two steals while Martin rejected two ASU shot attempts. Harrell dished out four assists in his 100th career start, becoming the second Bobcat ever to reach the mark.
Â
Brandon Davis opened the scoring after hitting a spin move for a layup. However, the Red Wolves would net the next seven points. They would eventually stretch their advantage to 19-12 with 10:32 left in the opening stanza.
Â
The first of two three-pointers from Morgan in the half started an 11-3 run. The teams would trade a couple of baskets until Harrell scored five consecutive points to put the Bobcats ahead by four.
Â
Morgan's second triple of the period put TXST ahead by five but ASU got a jumper from Markise Davis to send Texas State into halftime leading 33-30.
Â
With 10:51 to go in the game, Davis knocked down a jumper to put the visitors up by two. That would be the Red Wolves last basket for the next 7:26. In that time, the Bobcats netted 11 points to take their largest lead of the game at 58-49.
Â
A three-pointer by Julian Lual and a putback layup got ASU to within one with 17 seconds remaining. Harrell was quickly fouled on the in-bounds and calmly knocked down both charity stripe attempts to extend the lead back to three.
Â
Coleman fouled Caleb Fields near midcourt with 2.1 remaining to prevent a last-second shot to tie the game. Fields missed the front-end of the one-and-one with the board being grabbed by
Jordan Mason. The freshman made his first attempt to seal the victory.
Â
Next up for TXST is the first-ever meeting with Old Dominion on Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. in San Marcos.
