SAN MARCOS, Texas – Hannah Earls delivered a walk-off single to center field in the eighth inning of Saturday night's game to earn the Bobcats another walk-off win against UT Arlington. Texas State remains undefeated in the TXST Classic with the 6-5 win over the Mavericks.
Both sides got out to a slow start in the game, and it took until the bottom of the fourth inning for either side to get on the score sheet. It came off a big RBI from
Megan Kelnar that brought in
Anna Jones and
Emilee Baker to give the Bobcats the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Mavs would pull back one run on an RBI single, then in the top of the seventh, the Mavs earned the tying run and forced the Bobcats to make some changes and fight for the win.
Head coach
Ricci Woodard knew her team was equipped for this situation.
"There's a lot of different pitchers to go to in different spots," Woodard said. "We can kind of pick and choose where to put players and not over-stress anyone."
Ultimately, headed into extra-innings, Woodard knew her team needed to take things one pitch at a time.
"We can go right back at them," Woodard told her team before extra-innings. "Let's just go back and win a ball game."
Extra-innings did not get off to an ideal start for the Bobcats as the Mavericks got three runs on them off an RBI single, an error, and a fielder's choice. Heading into the bottom of the eight, the Bobcats knew they needed to settle down and play their game.
To start the scoring in the four-run inning for the Bobcats was
Sara Vanderford, who advanced off
Karmyn Bass' RBI single. Up next, an error from the Mavericks would help
JJ Smith bring the game within one run.Â
From there, Woodard's mantra of 'one pitch at a time' came back into play.
Trahan was up to bat with the bases loaded with three balls and a strike, after earning the walk,
Sydney Harvey would advance home. Then stepped-up Earls.
"We just knew we had to calm down and play our game," Earls said. "Take it one pitch at a time."
After a 2-2 count, Earls had her pitch and set a single to center field to send
Katarina Zarate home. At the end of another long game between the Bobcats and the Mavs, Texas State did it again—another walk-off victory inside Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats would head home with a 6-5 win at the end of eight innings.
The team will be back in action tomorrow at noon for the finale of the TXST Classic against Colorado State.Â
