SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tori McCann threw a shutout while six different Bobcats drove in a run as Texas State opened the I-35 Tourney on Thursday with a 9-0 run-rule win over Lamar at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Â
McCann struck out seven and only allowed two hits over five innings to earn her first win of the season. The shutout of the Cardinals (0-7) was the first complete-game clean outing for McCann since her freshman season in 2020.
Â
Texas State (4-2) did nearly all of its damage in an eight-run fourth inning. The Bobcats had their first nine batters all reach base in the frame, and picked up RBI by three straight hitters in
Hannah Earls,
Ciara Trahan and
Piper Randolph. Earls had a two-run double to start the stretch.
Â
After Trahan later scored on a fielding error on a ball hit by
JJ Smith,
Emilee Baker and
Sydney Harvey contributed RBI singles to cap the scoring. The base hit by Harvey was the first of the freshman's career in her first career at-bat.
Â
Texas State finished with nine hits to match its season-high. Trahan and
Sara Vanderford led the two with two hits each.
Â
Lamar committed four errors, including two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
The Cardinals only had one runner in scoring position, which was on a two-out double in the top of the fifth inning.
Â
Texas State continues the I-35 Tourney on Friday with a 5 pm game against South Dakota State. It will be one of three games against the Jackrabbits this weekend.
