Bobcats and Monarchs to Meet in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the first time, the Texas State men's basketball team (12-14, 5-8 Sun Belt) will face Old Dominion (15-10, 7-6 Sun Belt) on the hardwood in Strahan Arena when the teams tipoff at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
 
As part of Black History Month celebration, Dr. Johnny E. Brown will be recognized at halftime. Dr. Brown was the first black student-athlete at Texas State when he arrived in San Marcos to play for the men's basketball team in the Fall of 1966.
 
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Brant Freeman and Suzanne Fox providing the action. Fans can also tune into KTSW 89.9 FM and the Varsity Sports Network app to listen to Clint Shields on the call.
 
About Texas State
Thursday night saw the Bobcats play to a hard fought 66-62 win over Arkansas State that snapped a three-game losing streak. Five players scored in double-figures led by 12 points from Tyrel Morgan. Defensively, Nighael Ceaser matched his career-high with five blocks and became the first TXST player since at least 2011-12 to have multiple five-rejection games in a season.
 
Mason Harrell scored 10 points against the Red Wolves to increase his career total to 1,413 and is now 18 points shy of surpassing Bruce Featherston (1971-74) for sixth place in program history. The senior guard paces the Bobcats in scoring (15.8), made field goals (122), made three-pointers (33), made free throws (87) and free throw percentage (84.5).
 
Ceaser is putting up 9.1 ppg while recording a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game and 21 blocks. Tyrel Morgan is contributing 8.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Also netting over seven points a contest is Nate Martin at 7.7 while making a team best 50.0% of his field goal attempts.
 
About Old Dominion
The Monarchs have won their last two games including a 63-60 win Thursday at Georgia State. The victory improved their road mark to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
 
Four players are averaging at least 10 points a game led by Tyreek Scott Grayson at 14.3. Chaunce Jenkins enters scoring 13.7 ppg and leads the team in made shots (120), made free throws (80), free throw percentage (74.8) and assists (69).
 
Mekhi Long is the team leader in rebounds (8.6) and blocked shots (37) while contributing 10.3 ppg. The fourth player with a double-digit scoring mark is Ben Stanley at 10.1 ppg. Thursday was his first game back in action after nearly missing a month of contests.
 
All-Time Series
Saturday is the first-ever meeting between Old Dominion and Texas State. The Monarchs will be the ninth opponent that the Bobcats will face for the first time in program history this season. TXST is 6-2 against first-time opponents with the last two games being setbacks to Marshall and Southern Miss.
