“Discipline Leads to Freedom” as Strong Defensive Showing Helps Bobcats to 72-46 Win over Denver

SAN MARCOS, Texas. – Focus, intensity, and discipline were the name of the game for the Bobcats as the team got its fifth home win of the season. Defensive work showed through in the Bobcats 39 rebounds, seven steals and two blocks with just 11 turnovers as the 'Cats won 72-46 on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Things started off hot for the 'Cats as Ja'Niah Henson drained a three on the first possession of the game just 15 seconds in after winning the tip. From there, Tiffany Tullis and Timia Jefferson got themselves on the board and Gara Beth Self drained another three to put the Bobcats up 10-5 early on in the first quarter. The offense continued to role as the 'Cats put up 22 points in the first quarter. While limiting the Pioneers to just 13 points in the first quarter, the Bobcats were in control after just 10 minutes played.

Henson started off quarter two the same way as quarter one, by draining a three on the first possession. Henson would ultimately go 3-6 from beyond the arc on the night, including another drained three as the shot clock expired at the end of the first half. Henson's three sent the Bobcats into the halftime break with a 20-point lead after they held the Pioneers in single digits. Jaylin Foster also had a lights-out second quarter when she shot 2-3 and knocked down three free-throws to get herself eight points.

Out of the halftime break it was important for the Bobcats to stay hot and not let the break slow them down, which is exactly what happened. It became score by committee as six different Bobcats combined for 16 points in the third quarter, all while holding the Pioneers to just 10 points.

To close out the game the Bobcats were able to keep themselves up while knocking down 14 more points in the final quarter. Highlighted by Timia Jefferson's four points, three rebounds and a block, she was able to get herself a career-high nine rebounds in this game. Ultimately, at the end of 40 minutes, the Bobcats had closed its home non-conference slate with five wins.

WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID: "The one thing that I really appreciate about our team is the understanding that you need to be able to go from a game, whether it was a win or loss, and find a way to answer for things we need to get better at. That's what we saw tonight. We did a really good job of making sure that we were focused on scout but also focused on us and what we need to do, what we need to get better at."

WHAT JA'NIAH HENSON SAID: "[This game is] very important considering we have conference in just a couple games. We had to shake that loss off at Oklahoma State and come together as a team and we did that. From a team standpoint, it was about staying on top of the things out coaches ask of us whether it is plays or just being ready to play."
