Texas State Volleyball Sweep Conference Weekly Awards

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference offices announced Tuesday morning that Texas State swept the conference awards this week following two wins at Troy last weekend. Samantha Wunsch won Offensive Player of the Week, Alyssa Ortega won Defensive Player of the Week and Ryann Torres was named Setter of the Week.

"What a testament to the successful weekend we had at Troy," said head coach Sean Huiet. "To be able to sweep the weekly awards is pretty awesome. We know the team's success is what helps get these individual awards, so kudos to our team for taking care of business. [Torres] is playing at a high level and continues to lead the team, not just with assists but her blocking and serving have been huge.  [Wunsch] continues to get better each week, she's not only scoring points for us but she is slowing down opponents best attackers.  [Ortega] has been so steady for us and I am glad she was recognized for how she has been playing.  Her serving and defense makes her one of the top liberos in our conference."

Samantha Wunsch was lights out for the Bobcats in the team's two wins over Troy. The outside hitter had 34 kills in eight sets for an average of 4.25 a set. Her 34 kills landed her with an impressive .433 hitting percentage. This was highlighted by the redshirt freshman's career-high night in the Bobcats first match with Troy where she hit .481 (14-1-27) and paired it with six blocks, getting involved on both sides of the ball to help the Bobcats to the crucial win. Additionally, she had 10 blocks on the weekend for an average of 1.25, her second week in a row with over 1.00 block/set.

Alyssa Ortega's 41 digs for an average of 5.13 per set helped the Bobcats in the two big wins this weekend. Ortega's work made the difference in match two versus the Trojans where she had 25 digs for an average of 6.25 per set. The libero has been lights out for the Bobcats all season but her digging against the traditionally prolific Trojans offense was a key part in the Bobcats wins on the road as they competed for the top spot in the division.

Ryann Torres had 80 assists for an average of 10.00 a set this weekend which helped the Bobcats to an impressive .246 team hitting percentage. Torres also hit her landmark 1,000th career assist in the Bobcats first match of the weekend. In addition to her setting up the Bobcats offense all weekend, the setter got involved on both sides of the ball with six kills, 11 digs and four blocks. In a weekend against a traditionally prolific Troy offense, she was able to do her job in setting up the Bobcats offense while putting in work to defend as well.

This is Torres' third Setter of the Week honor of her career, and Samantha Wunsch's second Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career. Ortega's Defensive Player of the Week was her first honor but she is the sixth different Bobcat to win a conference weekly award this year.

KJ Johnson and Samantha Wunsch won Offensive Player of the Week in weeks one and two, Bailey Hanner won Defensive Player of the Week in week eight, and Jade Defraeye won the Defensive honor in week nine. Torres' prior Setter of the Week awards were in week two and eight.

The Bobcats will now close the regular season as West Division leaders against East Division leaders Coastal Carolina. The matches will be Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. inside Strahan Arena.
