RUSTON, La. – Five Texas State players reached double-figures Wednesday afternoon against Southern Utah led by
Kaden Gumbs' first career double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. It would be the Thunderbirds that would come out on top 74-67 in the Thomas Assembly Center.
Â
The loss drops the Bobcats to 2-4 on the season while SUU is now 2-3.
Â
Gumbs finished the game 7-of-16 from the field and would dish out four assists.
Joshua O'Garro totaled 12 points and seven rebounds while both
Dylan Dawson and
Brandon Love had 10 points apiece. Love also blocked three shots to extend his multi-rejection game streak to seven games.
Â
As a team, TXST was 27-of-63 (42.9%) shooting the ball but was just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. The team did outrebound the Thunderbirds 40-31 and held a 16-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
Â
The Bobcats started hot making their first four shot attempts and would lead for most of the first half. They would take their largest advantage in the period at 15-6 after Gumbs knocked down a mid-range jumper.
Â
However, over the final 3:51 of the opening 20 minutes, TXST was held scoreless while the Thunderbirds scored seven straight points to take a 28-25 advantage into the break.
Â
A turnaround jumper by
Christian Turner from the right elbow just over a minute into the second half cut TXST's deficit to a point. SUU would extend the lead to 46-35 after a 12-3 run that saw Gumbs respond with five straight points to get the contest to within six.
Â
That would be as close as the Bobcats would get as the Thunderbirds knocked down three consecutive three-pointers to lead by 15.
Â
A late charge from Texas State over the last two minutes saw it get within six on back-to-back layups from Horne and O'Garro. It would be too late as SUU took the contest.
