HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — Texas State got its second win of the weekend with a sweep over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The grit the Bobcats showed yesterday continued through set one. After an early run from the Golden Eagles found the Bobcats down, the battled back through the midway point of the set. Highlighted by Sam Wunsch hitting .714 (5-0-7) through the opening set and
Sophie Childs five kills of her own, the Bobcats dug out a 26-24 win in set one.Â
The Bobcats found a rhythm through set two which included a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead after two aces by
Alyssa Clark and a block by
KJ Johnson and
Bailey Hanner. The Bobcats had to dig deep for the set win, but another four kills from Wunsch and three from Childs found the win for the Bobcats. It was another 4.0 team blocks from the Bobcats that made the difference and held Southern Miss to hitting sub .100 again and got the set win.
Set three was when
Bailey Hanner and
Jade Defraeye started to heat up. After Hanner got a block assist followed directly by a kill to make things equal at 19 apiece, the Bobcats knew they could grind out the sweep and go home with two wins. As Southern Miss matched point, it was a kill by Defraeye and a block by her and
Samantha Wunsch that made the difference. Set point was decided off a Golden Eagle attack error and the Bobcats won set three 25-22.
WHAT HEAD COACH SEAN HUIET SAID:
"I'm really proud of the grit we showed this weekend. We saw a lot of different people play this weekend and it was a total team effort. We were able to go on the road and get two conference wins, which is huge. I'm really proud of how hard we fought this weekend."
