SAN MARCOS, Texas – The duo of
Nighael Ceaser and
Davion Coleman came off the bench to combine to score 39 points in Texas State's (11-11, 4-5 Sun Belt) 70-67 victory over Georgia Southern (12-10, 5-4 Sun Belt) in Strahan Arena Thursday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
Â
Ceaser matched his career best of 23 points as he finished the night 10-of-14 from the field and made 3-of-6 at the free throw line. The senior netted 17 of his points in the final 20 minutes.
Â
A career-high 16 points was tallied by Coleman, who had a 5-for-10 night shooting. He came into the game having made just two three-pointers in his Bobcat career and knocked down three in the contest. The Houston native also set a new career best with five rebounds and matched his career-high of two assists.
Â
"We finally got us one. I think the fans, community and student body has been waiting for a reason to celebrate these guys and they had one tonight. It was a phenomenal atmosphere and a phenomenal effort by our guys," said head coach
Terrence Johnson. "Just a hungry, thirst group of young men that stayed the course and made up their minds that they were going to trust each other and believe and hold on through out the course of the game no matter what happened."
Â
"Tonight, we beat a good team. Just so happened that things went our ways. I'm sure they don't' want one of their key guys to go 1-for-10 but I like to think that our guys did a pretty good job of making it hard for him tonight. Overall, I thought it was a complete, total team effort. I thought we had great leadership down the stretch from
Drue Drinnon,
Nighael Ceaser and
Tyrel Morgan.
Â
Jordan Mason finished with 12 points to reach double figures for his third consecutive game. Also having a double-digit night offensively was
Tyrel Morgan with 10 points, eight of which came in the first half. Despite being held scoreless in 14 minutes of action,
Nate Martin grabbed a game-high seven boards.
Â
The Eagles scored the first 10 points of the game before TXST got on the scoreboard with Coleman's first triple. That long distance shot kicked started a 17-4 run for the Bobcats over a 7:04 span. GS was able to come back and take a 36-31 lead into halftime.
Â
In the second half, Texas State had two 7-0 runs with the second giving them a 51-47 lead. Twice Ceaser hit jumpers to give the Bobcats a seven-point advantage with the last coming at 64-57 with 3:07 to play.
Â
GS was able to chip away and got to within two but Coleman made two free throws to extend the lead back to four. The Eagles' Tyren Moore was fouled on the other end and made both of his charity stripe attempts to again make it a two-point contest.
Â
Coleman was fouled with 9.4 seconds to play but missed his first free throw try. He converted the second to make it 70-67 in favor of TXST. Moore got a three-point shot off before the buzzer that was off the mark for the Bobcats to claim the win.
Â
Next up for TXST is a trip to Southern Miss for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.
