Texas State Falls Short, Loses on Basket in Closing Seconds

Texas State allowed 5 unanswered points in the final 61 seconds

MOBILE, Ala. – In the closing seconds, South Alabama's Kelsey Thompson hit a driving lay-up for the game-winning basket as Texas State had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 45-43 loss to the Jaguars at the Mitchell Center.

After trailing for most of the game, the Bobcats (13-6, 5-3 Sun Belt) were up three with a minute-and-a-half to go, but Thompson hit a step-back three-pointer with a minute left to tie the game at 43-43. Texas State had the opportunity for the go-ahead points on the ensuing possession, but a missed three-point turnover by Ja'Kayla Bowie followed by an offensive rebound that resulted in a shot-clock violation turned the ball back over to the Jaguars.

South Alabama (5-14, 1-7 Sun Belt) did not call a timeout on the dead ball after the shot clock violation, and after loading up on the left side near the home bench, Thompson drove past the Texas State defense for the game-winner and snapped the Jaguars' 17-game conference losing streak.

Neither side was able to pull away all afternoon as both teams shot 35 percent or less and committed a combined 37 turnovers. The Bobcats were 17-of-50 from the field (34 percent) while South Alabama was 18-of-52 (35 percent).

Both teams only went to the free throw line a combined 15 times. Texas State was 7-of-7 at the line.

While Texas State turned it over 18 times, the Bobcat defense limited the Jaguars to only 14 points off the turnovers. On the other side, meanwhile, Texas State forced South Alabama to turn it over 19 times and scored nearly half of its points (21) off the Jaguar miscues.

Tianna Eaton turned in her first double-double of her Texas State career with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She was 7-of-16 in field goal shooting and added four steals as well.
