SAN MARCOS, TX — The Louisiana softball team brought its bats to Bobcat Softball Stadium Saturday afternoon as the Ragin' Cajuns scored 10 runs on 10 hits to knocked off Texas State, 10-1.
"We got beat today," said Texas State softball head coach
Ricci Woodard. "We didn't do a lot of things well. We didn't capitalize when we had chances early in the game and that's when you have to against good teams. To me, (Louisiana) just out played us today and capitalized when they needed to."
Texas State (18-15, 5-6) actually got on the scoreboard first when
Hannah Earls and
Sara Vanderford jumped on Louisiana starting pitcher Kandra Lamb with two doubles in the Bobcats' first three plate appearances on the day. Vanderford's came after Earls advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt off the bat of
Ciara Trahan.
Melissa Mayeux wasted little time tying the game, though, as the Louisiana shortstop sent the first pitch from
Karsen Pierce (4-3) over the left-centerfield fence for a solo home run to start the top of the second inning. Pierce went on to retire the next three Ragin' Cajuns batters to set the stage for the Bobcats' best scoring opportunity on the afternoon in the bottom of the second.
Caitlyn Rogers led off the frame by sending a 2-2 pitch to left field for a double to force a Louisiana pitching change.
Cat Crenek followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that ultimately resulted in Rogers moving to third on a throwing error.
Claire Ginder loaded the bases with no outs by drawing a five-pitch walk.
However, the next two Bobcat batters went down swinging before Earls grounded out to second to leave the bases loaded.
The following inning,
Anna Jones sent a 0-1 pitch to deep centerfield for a two-out triple but was left there as Rogers grounded out to short to end the inning.
After living on the edge of Texas State taking the lead, Louisiana scored seven runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning.
Crenek and Ginder attempted to spark a Texas State rally in the bottom of the fourth inning as the two led off the inning with an infield single and a walk, respectively, but back-to-back strikeouts and another groundout left the duo of base.
The Ragin' Cajuns went on to add two more runs on two more hits in the top of the fifth.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, April 3 at 12 p.m. CT.
