SAN MARCOS, Texas –
Caitlyn Rogers had a pair of extra-base hits while
Jessica Mullins and
Karsen Pierce combined to strike out 12 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi batters as Texas State picked up a 6-2 midweek win over the Islanders at the Bobcat Softball Stadium on Wednesday.
The Bobcats (7-5) trailed on two occasions in the first three innings, but five unanswered runs over three straight frames helped put the Islanders (9-11) away.
Sara Vanderford hit a two-out, game-tying solo home run in the third before a triple by Rogers in the fourth was answered home by a
Cat Crenek go-ahead single. In the fifth, Rogers hit her second home run of the season to cap a three-run inning.
Texas State totaled eight hits, four of which were for extra bases.
Mullins overcame a slow start by finishing with seven strikeouts in four innings to earn her fourth win of the year. The sophomore surrendered three of her five baserunners in the first inning but leveled out and struck out five of her last 10 batters faced.
Pierce spelled Mullins starting in the fifth and threw three innings of no-hit softball. The sophomore scattered three baserunners – a walk, an error and a hit by pitch – while striking out five to pick up her first save of the season.
The pair of Texas State pitchers only allowed two of the 10 different batters in the game to register a hit. Leadoff hitter Pal Egan finished the night 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. She also reached with a hit by pitch.
Rogers led Texas State by going 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Ciara Trahan joined Rogers among the Bobcats with multi-hit efforts. The freshman went 2-for-3 with two singles.
In a new lineup, the five through eight hitters for Texas State – Rogers, Crenek and
Samara Lagway – combined for four of the five Bobcat RBI and half of the eight hits. Crenek and Lagway each had a hit and an RBI.
Texas State, winners in three of its last five games, travels to Tucson, Ariz. for its next round of games. The Bobcats will open the University of Arizona Tournament on Friday with a doubleheader against Loyola (10 am) and North Dakota (12:15 pm).
