HOUSTON TX — The Texas State softball program ran its season win total to five when it closed out its weekend trip to Houston with an 8-2 win over Houston on Sunday. That outcome followed the Bobcats dropping a game to No. 1 Oklahoma, 8-0, earlier in the day.
To start the day, the Sooners used the long ball to power their way past the Bobcats as Oklahoma connected on a quartet of two-run home runs, including a pair in the first inning. The fourth and final two-run home run — Grace Lyons' two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning — ended the game.
By holding Oklahoma scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, freshman pitcher
Presley Glende ended the Sooners' consecutive innings with a run scored streak at 12. The following inning, Glende snapped OU's streak of 23 straight innings with a base runner when the right-hander entired the heart of the Sooner lineup in order.
At the plate,
Anna Jones and
Kylie George were credited with the Bobcats' two hits when Jones started the second inning with a single. George's single came with one out in the third.
Texas State wasted little time taking the lead against Houston when
Anna Jones plated
Piper Randolph on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Randolph scored, again, two innings later when
Dani Elder singled to centerfield with the bases loaded.
The Cougars struck back with single runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, before
Sara Vanderford scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. The Bobcats lead grew by another run when
Cat Crenek singled home Jones. Jones, an inning later, made it 5-2, Texas State, with a single to right field to score Randolph for the third time.
Elder put the feather in the cap and the weekend with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth.
In circle,
Jessica Mullins picked up her second win on the season as she tossed four scoreless innings of relief after
Karsen Pierce started the game and went the first three innings.
