SAN MARCOS, Texas – Redshirt juniors
Levi Bell and
Kyle Hergel were selected as 2022 All-Sun Belt honorees, as voted by coaches and media, the conference office announced on Thursday. Bell, a defensive lineman, was named second team while Hergel, an offensive lineman, was third team.
Â
In addition to Bell and Hergel, four other Bobcats were named All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention: wide receiver
Ashtyn Hawkins, kicker
Seth Keller, outside linebacker
Jordan Revels and safety
Tory Spears.
Â
In his first season with Texas State, Bell was a force on the defensive front as he was third in the conference in tackles for loss with 13.5 and top-20 in sacks with 5.0. The Cedar Park, Texas native also had 66 tackles and seven quarterback hurries.
Â
Bell had a TFL in 10 of the 12 games, including 3.0 in the season opener at Nevada and 2.0 in the finale against Louisiana. His 13.5 TFLs were a FBS program record and most by a Bobcat since 2011.
Â
Hergel started all 12 contests at right guard and played in 850 total snaps. He finished the regular season as the top-rated guard in the Sun Belt in PFF pass blocking grades. He was also tied for third best in the conference in pass blocking efficiency, according to PFF. In 509 pass plays, Hergel allowed one sack and eight total pressures.
Â
Hergel, who has started 24 consecutive games for the Bobcats, also anchored an offensive line that helped running back
Lincoln Pare finish with the most rushing yards by a Texas State player in a single season since 2015.
Â
It is the second year in a row a Texas State offensive lineman has earned all-conference honors and third time in the last four years.
Â
Bell is the first Texas State defensive player to receive all-conference honors since
Jarron Morris (second team) and
Nico Ezidore (third team) in 2020.
Â
For the honorable mention honorees, Hawkins was on track to have the best season in Texas State history as a wide receiver. The sophomore had 56 receptions for 587 yards and seven touchdowns in the first nine games of the season before suffering a season-ending injury on a punt return in the first half at ULM in early November. His 56 receptions remain the third-most by a Bobcat in Texas State's FBS history.
Â
Keller became Texas State's all-time leader in career field goals made after going 14-of-16 on field goals this year. He set the school record for career field goals (37) in the season finale against Louisiana while he is also the most accurate kicker in program history with a career field goal percentage of 86.1 percent. He was named Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week twice, including when he made the game-winning field goal in the final seconds against Arkansas State in late November.
Â
Revels, who moved from defensive line to edge outside linebacker this season, was disruptive in his 12 games, totaling career-highs in TFLs (11.0), sacks (4.5) and quarterback hurries (10) to go with his personal-best 70 tackles.
Â
Spears had a breakout season as he moved into the starting role at safety. The Houston native was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week in October and had 77 tackles (41 solo), 2.5 TFLs, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 10 games.
Â
This is the second year in a row Revels and Keller were named All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention. Last year, Hergel was named All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention.
Â
Texas State has seen 24 Bobcats be named All-Sun Belt first, second or third team since joining the conference in 2013.
