Harrell and Morgan Score 20 Apiece at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Both Mason Harrell and Tyrel Morgan scored 20 points apiece Thursday night on the road against UTSA. The home team though would come out on top 61-56 in Convocation Center.

"It was a tough game for us, especially shooting from the perimeter. I thought they did a really good job of mixing up the defense and playing zone as much as they did, but we have to do a better job of executing our game plans throughout," said head coach Terrence Johnson. "Thought we got caught up a little bit in their pace and allowed them to dictate a little bit too much of the action. Credit has to go to the home team. They did a good job of executing their game plan, and we have to regroup and get ready for a West Coast swing."

Morgan went 8-for-11 from the field on his way to a career night offensively. He also grabbed seven rebounds with three coming on the offensive glass. Harrell scored 10 points in each half and knocked down four shots from beyond the arc overall. The fifth-year senior grabbed five rebounds for the third straight game and recorded three steals.

Nate Martin grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, one shy of his career-high, dished out three assists and blocked two shots. Finishing with a team best five assists off the bench was Drue Drinnon.

First seven points of the contest were scored by the Roadrunners before Harrell hit a three-pointer at the 16:12 mark to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard. That basket would start a 10-5 run for TXST heading into the first media timeout with 13:48 on the clock.

Morgan scored eight straight of the Bobcats points including back-to-back alley-oop dunks to give them their first lead of the game at 25-23. However, UTSA would close the half on an 8-2 run to take a four-point advantage into halftime.

A three-pointer from Drinnon followed by a fastbreak layup from Morgan gave Texas State it's largest lead of the game at 45-41. In response the Roadrunners scored 12 of the next 13 points over the next five and a half minutes to match their lead of the game.

Harrell scored eight straight points behind two three-pointers to give the advantage back to the Bobcats with 3:48 remaining at 54-53. Only two more points were tallied by TXST, those coming on a layup courtesy of Harrell, while UTSA scored 10 to claim the win.

Next up for Texas State is a trip out west to take on California on Monday. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. CT in Haas Pavilion.
