Texas State makes history, becomes first program to sweep league’s three weekly awards

SAN MARCOS, TX — In 2022, there isn't much the Texas State volleyball program hasn't accomplished on the court.

But Tuesday morning, as announced by the league, the Bobcats accomplished a feat for the first time: sweep the Sun Belt Conference's weekly volleyball awards as Emily DeWalt (Setter), Jacqueline Lee (Defensive) and Janell Fitzgerald (Offensive) were honored for their performances over the weekend.

With the trio of recognitions, Texas State becomes the first Sun Belt volleyball program in league history to win all three of the Sun Belt's weekly volleyball awards in the same week. It marks the first time a team has won all the league's weekly awards in the same week since Arkansas State accomplished the feat on Oct. 8, 2012, when the conference only had two — Player and Defensive — awards.

Since the conference shifted from two weekly honors to four (from 2013 to 2020), Texas State has now won at least three weekly volleyball awards during the same week a league-leading five times. Arkansas State (3), South Alabama (1) and Coastal Carolina (1) have also accomplished the feat, but none have done so since the 2017 season while the Bobcats have four separate times since the 2018 season.

"To sweep the weekly awards is a testament to how this team is playing right now," said Texas State volleyball head coach Sean Huiet. "I think Jackie has stepped up and has our defensive leading the conference in digs per set, which is huge. Janell has really come on strong and is producing a lot of points for us. Emily is a warrior. She broke the Sun Belt career assist record and had this team ready to battle.

"Being able to be the first team to go 3 for 3 is huge. I'm so proud of the whole team and glad these three are getting recognized for their play."

Fitzgerald turned in back-to-back season-best performances against, statistically, one of the best defenses in the conference in league-only matches as the outside hitter led the Sun Belt with 6.0 kills per set and 58.0 total points (6.44 points per set). She recorded the top-two kill performances of the weekend with a 26-kill performance in the Bobcats' four-set win on Friday, before going to a season-high 28 less than 20 hours later. Fitzgerald capped both offensive performances with 15 and 17 digs, respectively, for her eight and ninth double-double on the season.

Lee recorded on the best two-match defensive performances in Texas State volleyball history during the program's split at South Alabama over the weekend. She finished the two-match swing against the Jaguars with a conference-leading 6.11 digs per set en route to digging 55 total attacks in nine sets played. In the Bobcats' four-set win on Friday night, Lee turned in a then-career performance with 23 digs, before setting a new career high with 32 digs the following day. Her 32 digs on Saturday were just five shy of tying the program's single-match record of 37 set in 2013.

DeWalt, who picked up her 24th career Sun Belt Setter of the Week honor, turned in back-to-back 40-plus assist performances in a pair of matches at South Alabama en route to becoming the Sun Belt Conference's new career assists leader. With her 47-assist outing on Saturday, DeWalt passed Middle Tennessee's Leslie Clark (2006-09) for the top spot and went on the become the first setter in league history to surpass 5,700 career assists. She was instrumental in guiding Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Janell Fitzgerald to a conference-best 54 kills and 6.0 kills per set.
