Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bobcats double down on double-doubles against Trojans

SAN MARCOS, TX — For the second time this season, the Texas State women's basketball program finished a basketball game with multiple student-athletes earning a double-double as Da'Nasia Hood and Lauryn Thompson accomplished the feat against Troy on Thursday night.

Hood, who entered the contest as one of just three student-athletes in the Sun Belt Conference ranked in the top seven in both scoring and rebounding average, tied her season high in points as the senior forward went for a team-high 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting. It marked the season time this season Hood's scoring total equaled 21 when finishing the game with a double-double after she had 21 points and 13 rebounds against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 29, 2021.

After finishing the first half with six points and nine rebounds, Thompson collected her second double-double of the season — 16 points, 12 rebound against Arlington Baptist, too — in the closing minute of the game when she converted a second-chance layup off a Raven Adams assist. Thompson's play at a double-double was kept alive after Hood collected the offensive rebound — her 10th rebound on the night — off a missed layup attempt by Sierra Brooks with 41 seconds left in the game. Thompson went on to finish the night with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Thursday night's contest marked the first time since Dec. 31, 2018 against Texas A&M International that exactly two Texas State women's basketball student-athletes finished a basketball game with a double-double. Earlier this season, three Bobcats — Hood, Thompson and Gabby Standifer — accomplished the feat against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 29, 2021.

FROM HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE

"Going into halftime, I felt good about where we were because it was a two-possession game. (Troy) had — I want to say — only 12 to 14 opportunities at the rim, so if we could clean up, in terms of taking care of the basketball, and do a better job of our shot selection and just trusting each other when moving the basketball, we would be OK. But that didn't happen in the third quarter or the fourth quarter. And every time, I felt like, we started to close the gap, they started to separate themselves. Then we were gassed — both mentally and physically — in the fourth quarter."

GAME NOTES
  • With her 5-assist performance against Troy Thursday night, Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor now has 10 basketball games with 5-or-more assists this season. Taylor has reached the mark in all three Sun Belt Conference contests so far this season.
  • Ja'Kayla Bowie's 11-point scoring evening against Troy Thursday marked the most points in a regular-season Sun Belt contest for the senior guard since having 12 points at ULM on Feb. 26, 2021.
  • In her first conference game of the 2021-22 season, Texas State sophomore forward Nicole Leff scored five points and brought down a season-high four rebounds in just eight minutes off the bench. Leff's four rebounds were a regular-season career high for the Cedar Park native.
