Texas State close out seven-match road stretch with trip to Texas

SAN MARCOS, Texas — For the third time in six months, the Texas State volleyball program will do battle against the University of Texas Longhorns when the two squads square off in Austin on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.

The match can be viewed on the Longhorn Network.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS

Texas State is coming off its first win of the season when the Bobcats knocked off Rhode Island in three sets to close out the Red Raider Classic on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021. In that match, Lauren Teske led the Bobcats with 12 kills en route to being named to the all-tournament team.

Texas State enters Tuesday's match as one of only two teams in the Sun Belt Conference with multiple student-athletes ranked the in the conference's hitting percentage (minimum three attacks per set) top 10 with Tessa Marshall (.381) and Tyeranee Scott (.320) coming in fifth and eight, respectively.

The Bobcats enter tomorrow's action as the only Sun Belt Conference team with multiple student-athletes ranked in the conference's assist per set top eight list with Emily DeWalt (8.31) and Ryann Torres (6.83) being fifth and eighth, respectively.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Texas, which has been holding onto the No. 1 spot in the AVCA coaches' poll since the preseason, enters Tuesday's match with a 4-0 record that includes wins over then-No. 10 Minnesota and then-No. 20 Stanford.

The Longhorns have dropped only one set in four matches so far this season. The Golden Gophers took the third set against Texas in a match in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 1, 2021. UT has not dropped a set at home this season.

Through four matches, Texas has only one blocking error, 13 reception errors, 39 serve errors, 51 attack errors and zero ball handling errors.

SERIES HISTORY

Texas State and Texas' volleyball history dates all the way back to 1970, when the two teams played six times with the Bobcats winning five of those six matchups. However, the Longhorns currently lead the all-time series 49-20-2.

The two programs played a home-and-home series during the 2021 spring season with the Longhorns taking both matches in three sets.

Texas State's last win over Texas came on Sept. 5, 2000 when the Bobcats won in San Marcos in five sets. TXST's last win — a three set (2-1) victory — over UT in Austin came on Oct. 17, 1975.
