SAN MARCOS, Texas — There's
level, then there's the
next level Meagan King occupied Sunday afternoon as the senior right-handed pitcher threw her first complete game shutout of the season as Texas State knocked off Georgia Southern, 1-0, to sweep the weekend series.
"I thought (Meagan) came in yesterday and did a great job, so it was an easy decision to go right back to her today," said Texas State softball head coach
Ricci Woodard. "She threw really well today and kept (Georgia Southern) off balance all day.
With Sunday's performance, King, who moves to 8-2 on the season in the pitching circle, tossed 10.0 consecutive scoreless innings against the Eagles over the weekend following a spotless 3-inning appearance on Sunday. King, who entered Sunday's contest with a season-high nine strikeouts against South Alabama on April 10, surpassed that when she struck out Shayla Smith looking to end the top of the fifth. She went on to finish the game with 11 strikeouts, which tied her career high set against South Alabama — in a non-conference matchup — on Feb. 7, 2020.
King finished Sunday afternoon's game having pitched seven innings, scattering three hits, not issuing a walk and striking out 12.
"I think I was just doing a good job of hitting the corners and keeping them off balance," King said. "I think I was just able to work both up and down (in the strike zone) which I don't really get to do a lot, so just being able to go up, down, left and right and be able to throw all my pitches felt really good."
On the heels on Saturday's appearance — when she retired all nine batters she faced — King continued that streak as she set down the first five batters she faced to open Sunday's game before Olivia Creamer was credited with an infield single. King responded by striking out the next four batters and got the first out in the fourth inning before Faith Shirley dropped a bunt down and was able to fill a would-be throwing lane for Bobcat catcher
Caitlyn Rogers.
A fielding error led to the Eagles having a running in scoring position, but King, again, bounced back with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
That started a streak of 10 consecutive batters retired, before Creamer beat out a throw from Bobcat shortstop
Tara Oltmann with two away in the top of the seventh. King needed just three more pitches to shut the book on her stellar weekend.
On the flip side, one run was more than plenty for King as
ArieAnn Bell recorded her 26th career home run when she sent a 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence to start the bottom of the sixth inning.
Texas State (30-9, 12-5) will return to action on Wednesday, April 28 when the Bobcats play host to Houston Baptist at 5 p.m.
