WACO, Texas — Head coach
Ricci Woodard and her Texas State softball team woke up their bats Wednesday night as the Bobcats were credited with a season-high 14 hits en route to earning a 7-5 victory at Baylor.
Texas State (26-6, 8-3) broke through in the run column first when freshman
Piper Randolph recorded the first of her career-high three hits on the evening when she singled through the elft side with two outs in the top of the second inning to score
Hailey MacKay. Two batters later,
Kylie George made it 3-0, Bobcats, when she plated
Baylee Lemons and Randolph with a two-out infield single in the inning.
MacKay extended the Bobcat lead to 4-0 in the top of the third with a one-out solo home run.
However, Baylor (21-9, 3-0) responded with a 4-run bottom of the third inning as the Bears scattered six singles throughout the inning.
Texas State responded with its third run-scoring inning when
Sara Vanderford hit the Bobcats' second solo home run on the evening when she clubbed a two-out pitch over the left-field fence to give the Bobcats a lead they wouldn't relinquish the remainder of the game.
Cat Crenek, who re-entered the game after pinch-hitter
Samara Lagway singled through the right side to start the fifth inning, stole second, then advanced to third on a Randolph single, scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4 Bobcats.
Baylor cut its deficit to one run in the bottom half of the frame on a one-out sacrifice fly. Then,
Tara Oltmann matched her 'Smashed Sister' Vanderford in the home run department when she led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run for her eighth home run of the season to tie Vanderford for the team and conference lead.
Mullins (13-3) worked around a one-out single, then two two-out baserunners in the bottom of the seventh to seal the Bobcats' win.
Texas State will return to action on Friday, April 16 when the Bobcats travel to No. 14 Louisiana for a three-game, three-day series.
