Bobcats upended in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Texas State was downed by Kansas in straight sets 19-25, 15-25, 13-25 on Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. 
 
It was not the Bobcats night (27-4, 15-1 Sun Belt) and the Jayhawks (6-10, 5-10 Big 12) took advantage by registering a .418 hitting percentage, 40 kills, six aces, seven blocks, and 40 digs. TXST finished with 30 kills, a .086 hitting percentage, one ace, two blocks, and 30 digs.   
  
Junior outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald led the Bobcats with a match-high 11 kills (.143) and had four digs. Senior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott was next with eight kills (.333) and had two blocks, two digs, and one assist. Junior setter Emily DeWalt turned in26 assists, five digs, two blocks, and one kill, and junior libero Kayla Granado led the defense with seven digs.
 
Although no Jayhawk recorded double-digit kills, junior outside hitter Anezka Szabo and freshman middle blocker Caroline Crawford both led the team with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Crawford also had four blocks and an ace. Freshman setter Elise McGhie filled the stat sheet with 30 assists, five kills, four blocks, three digs, and one ace, and sophomore libero Kennedy Farris led all players with 12 digs. 
 
Set 1
The Bobcats scored the first two points of the match, but the Jayhawks responded with a 6-1 run to take an early 6-3 lead. KU pushed its lead to 11-7, but TXST cut the lead to one-point multiple times, forming a 7-4 run to make the score 15-14. Kansas then pulled away with four unanswered points that ballooned to a 10-5 run to win the first set, 25-19. Fitzgerald led the Bobcats with five kills, and Scott and sophomore Caitlan Buettner followed with three kills each.
 
Set 2
Texas State led 5-4 thanks to a 4-1 run before Kansas warmed up and led 15-10 at the media timeout behind a 6-1 run. The Jayhawk run expanded to 8-1 before Fitzgerald found the floor again, and the Bobcats scored four unanswered to trim the lead 17-14 and force a KU timeout. The Jayhawks dominated out of the break, however scoring eight of the final nine points to win the set 25-15. 
 
Set 3
TXST held an early 3-2 lead, but KU pieced together another 6-2 run to go ahead, 8-5. The Bobcats pulled within one point twice, but the Jayhawks stretched their lead 15-10 at the media timeout. It was all Jayhawks from there as the lead increased and the home team cruised to a 25-13 win.

The Bobcats will complete their six-match road trip to open spring competition with a match at No. 2 Texas at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 8 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
